A baggage conveyor vehicle just took out an engine on one of Air Peace's operating Airbus A320s, on the ground at MMA1.

Flight P4-7427 had landed from Kano. Passengers were already off. The NAHCO vehicle struck the engine during routine ground handling. No emergency, no drama. Just a vehicle and a stationary aircraft that should never have met.

The aircraft was rostered for multiple sectors over the coming days. With it now being unserviceable, every one of those flights now needs a different tail number, or it doesn't fly.

Ground damage doesn't make headlines like an inflight emergency. But it grounds airplanes just as effectively.

A rigid wing would kill you faster than a flexible one.

Why?

When an aircraft flies through a turbulent air mass, the wing experiences a sharp spike in aerodynamic load. If that structure were completely rigid, every bit of that force would transfer instantly into the wing root and the main fuselage.

The bolts connecting the spars to the aircraft would suddenly take enormous loads. Passengers would feel violent up-and-down forces, and over time the constant stress would cause the aircraft structure to weaken quickly.

Flexibility solves this. When the wing bends upward, it distributes that load. The structure absorbs the spike, then returns to its original shape. The fuselage barely feels it. That is the entire point.

But flexibility has a limit engineers have to respect.

Too much flexibility can create another danger: flutter.

Flutter is not turbulence. It occurs when a wing's natural vibration matches the aerodynamic forces acting on it, creating a self-sustaining oscillation that grows rapidly. If unchecked, it can destroy the structure within seconds.

To prevent this, engineers perform extensive vibration testing. The wing is designed so its natural bending and twisting frequencies stay well away from normal flight speeds, allowing vibrations to fade instead of grow.

A wing that cannot flex is not stronger. It is more likely to break.

So that flex is sensing and absorbing the forces of flight, helping to shield the cabin from loads that would otherwise be much harsher.

If you have ever seen a bright red glow deep inside a jet engine at night, you were not watching something go wrong.

The engine glows for a reason.

Jet engines burn fuel at temperatures above 1,700 degrees Celsius. That exceeds the melting point of the metals used to build them.

At those temperatures, the metal components inside the core get hot enough to emit visible light. The same way a stove burner glows red on high. The same way iron glows in a blacksmith's forge.
The metal is not melting. It is being "managed". Ceramic thermal barrier coatings and microscopic cooling holes keep the components below their destruction threshold while the gases around them burn hotter than molten steel.

Older engines had curved internal geometry that blocked the view into the core.

Modern high-bypass engines have a straight, unobstructed exhaust path.

Some examples:

Airbus A220 (Ibom Air, Delta Airlines, Air France etc);
Embraer E195-E2 (Air Peace, Azul Brazilian Airlines, etc)

The large bypass fan pushes cold air around the outside of the hot core. The result is a dark, cool outer ring framing a glowing red center.

You are not imagining the contrast. The engineering created it.

These components do not survive the heat by avoiding it. They survive because they were built to operate inside it.

That is the only kind of strength that holds when the pressure is real.
