This new recording of Christmas music for treble voices & harp by @CVMSMusic and @zitasilvaharp is a delight!
It pairs Britten’s majestic Ceremony of Carols with various newer works, including three stunning settings from @richard_allain of texts of mine 👇🏼
The 2024 commission 'There Will Be Rest' is by York-based composer Richard Allain, and gracefully merges ancient words from Advent prose with wintry imagery from poetry by Sara Teasdale. This creates an impression of 'musical starlight'; still yet sparkling, poignant yet hopeful.
PALIMPSEST - Released this Friday 8th Sept! Here’s Richard Allain to tell you about his powerful new work - Man Born of Man.

Just emerged from evensong sung by @Frideswides at @ChChCathedralOx, where they sang @richard_allain's Cana's Guest as the anthem.
It's a truly awesome piece to hear in real life.
@richard_allain @rbrignall@Frideswides@ChChCathedralOx@WMClassical That’s so lovely to hear. It is such a joy to hear it live – and great fun to sing, too. Roll on Epiphany, when hopefully there’ll be more great performances …
@StMartinsVoices@smitf_london@stmartins_music Sadly no, though I do have one of The Isley Brothers’ Summer Breeze somewhere if you’re desperate ;-)
Though Stanford’s The Blue Bird is hard to beat for a sky theme …
@mrgrahamross@peppapig@IainFarrington Marvellous. I am really hoping the programme includes a rendition of the Finale from Rossini’s William Tell overture with the audience singing along to the words:
Peppa Pig,
Peppa Pig,
Peppa PIG, PIG, PIG …
?
If not, there’s your encore…! 😆
'The Wedding at Cana is a story of extravagant gifts, a reminder to look out for God’s abundant generosity.'

Our Epiphany Carol Service is at 3pm today, and music includes @dovecomposer The Three Kings, Walton, All this Time, Maxwell Davies, Jesus autem hodie, Allain, Cana’s Guest, and the Kodály Gloria (Missa Brevis). Do join us if you are able.
#Eucharist today at 10am @SouthwMinster is sung by our Girl Choristers and Lay Clerks; the music includes #Haydn's Little Organ Mass, and @richard_allain's setting of words by Thomas Allain, 'Cana's Guest'
Wonderful to see ‘Cana’s Guest’ by @richard_allain (setting my words) being sung once again in so many places today.
Sadly not possible to be there to hear every performance in person – but delighted that I do get to sing it with @StWulframs this evening!
Wonderful to see the return this January of a wealth of #choral music for #Epiphany – including ‘Cana’s Guest’ by @richard_allain.
#Epiphanytide processions like today’s @SouthwMinster weren’t possible for many choirs last year.
Very good to have them back.
Every carol in this competition is a winner.
But @richard_allain’s Coventry Carol is something v special. The way it constantly oscillates between tenderness & terror, goodness & grief: it’s almost overwhelming.
Whoever you vote for, do please listen to it.
