Yeah, that loop is brutal, you can edge-case yourself into never shipping.

The thing I'm slowly learning is to not treat them all equally. Most stay theoretical forever. But the second one has an actual person attached to it, like this did, it stops being an edge case and jumps the line.

So I ship, then let real usage tell me which edges actually matter. Cheaper than guessing in my head at 2am.

One of my most engaged users is blind. He had lifetime Premium, cleared his storage, and got locked out.

That friction is real. I just put a small app through Google's gauntlet and the twenty-testers-for-fourteen-days rule alone nearly killed the motivation. For a side project it's brutal.

What he built is the right instinct. The current bar quietly filters out exactly the scrappy solo dev that used to make the platform interesting.

The ID and address verification is the part nobody sees coming. You don't just ship anymore, you apply to be allowed to ship.

Congrats, top 3 as a solo against agencies is no small thing.

On directories, the ones actually worth my time when I launched: Uneed, TinyLaunch, and Fazier for general traffic, AlternativeTo and SaaSHub for backlinks that stick around, and Peerlist if your crowd's on there. Most of the rest were a lot of effort for a quiet day.

That tracks with my experience shipping a small Android app this year. The scrutiny was almost all about who I am as a developer, identity verification, payment profile, account history, not really the app binary itself.

Makes sense from their side, a bad actor can swap app contents anytime, but the human behind the account is harder to fake at scale.

The flip side nobody mentions is how much it raises the bar for legit solo devs. Becoming an "established" identity is now its own onboarding cost.

Great breakdown. The thing that always strikes me about these setups is that everyone nails text, image, and now video, but on-device audio is the piece almost nobody talks about.

Speech synthesis got good enough to run real-time on a phone way before most people noticed, and it's what actually makes local AI usable hands-free.

"It fits on my desk now" is the real story though. Two years ago half this list was a research cluster.
