New data obtained via FOIA request from USDA-APHIS and @usaspending reveals that Herbruck’s Poultry Ranch, Michigan’s largest egg producer, received $89,258,483.11 in USDA indemnity payments after their flock became infected with highly pathogenic avian influenza. To exterminate the birds, they sealed up buildings, pumped in heat, and waited for the birds inside to die after several hours.

After that, they laid off 400 workers.

“One day, I walked out of the house, and it just smelled like pure death. Like a large animal died right near my house, but I looked around, and I didn’t see one. And I noticed the smell lingered day after day,” said Liz Ralston, who lives between Herbruck’s facilities.
