"In March 2014, Russians came into Donetsk and Luhansk—or rather they drove in from Russian oblasts just across the border—dressed up as “protesters.” In April, the Russians were no longer cautious or circumspect; they came in as armed special forces. In August, before the battle of Ilovaisk, Russians came in openly, as regular soldiers. The catastrophe of occupation unfolded gradually, hour by hour, day by day. That’s probably why, at first, we couldn’t believe it; then we couldn’t stop it."

Когда черкесов в XIX веке выселяли с многими тысячами жертв - это так самобытность уважали.
Когда еврейские погромы шли - опять же это было уважение самобытности.
Когда в Российской империи принудительно русифицировали Польшу, Украину, Финляндию - это был просто пик уважения самобытности.
Когда Голодомор устроили - это так с украинским и казахским народами взаимодействовали.
Когда эшелоны из только что захваченных стран Балтии увозили людей в Сибирь - это опять-таки было взаимодействие.
Когда такими же эшелонами целые народы с Северного Кавказа на смерть отправляли - ну так ведь с уважением к самобытности.
Сплошное взаимодействие и уважение самобытности, ничего больше.

Russian TV host Simonyan says Russia is fighting for survival. That sounds insane, but I suspect that in a perverse way it's true. Russia is not a nation. It is a an empire that sucks wealth from the territories it has conquered over the last 500 years into Moscow and St Petersburg. 20% of Russian homes don't have indoor plumbing, and of course most of them are in the provinces, and it is the ethnic minority territories that provide most of the cannon fodder for the war. It's worth noting that many of the Russian speaking areas of Russia were once independent states which were subjugated by Muscovy.

My thought is that Russia has no understanding of itself as anything other than an empire, and that if Russian society isn't able to unleash its anger and frustration on Russia's neighbours it might just tear itself apart.

People are eating weeds in Oleshky because there is almost nothing else left to eat.

There is no electricity, water or gas. Some people eat once a day. Shops are closed and medicine is scarce. Leaving means facing mined roads, with no agreed humanitarian corridor.
