I'm a big fan of hard-boiled novelist Charlie Huston, and last night I saw his adaptation of his baseball-themed novel Caught Stealing, directed by Darren Aronofsky. The movie was considered a bomb at the box office, and one can pontificate on the whys and wherefores (dark, literally and thematically), but it was absolutely one of my favorite Aronofsky movies. It has a completely unpredictable quality, and the performances are fantastic all around -- but especially from the supporting cast of whacky characters. From Matt Smith's hilarious british punk, to Nikita Kukushkin's hilarious wild dog Russian skinhead, to a completely surprising Griffin Dunne, to my two favorite mobsters in recent cinema, Liev Schreiber & Vincent D'Onofrio as the Hasidic Drucker brothers. Carol Kane was a fantastic bonus surprise as Bubbe. Even Bad Bunny delivers a hilarious performance. Aronofsky keeps it moving fast through the boroughs with a fantastic punk soundtrack. When the pop-animated end credits roll, with a cartoon cat, I got the feeling that this is Aronofsky's Something Wild, and for him it's a wide-audience programmer. Maybe that didn't pan out, but I felt like this movie was made for me. High recommend.
