A baker's son from a small Scottish town found a way to end thousands of years of human agony, and he tested it by knocking himself out cold on his own dining room floor.
His name was James Young Simpson, born in Bathgate in 1811, the seventh son of a village baker. He was clever enough to reach Edinburgh University at fourteen and became a professor of midwifery while still a young man. And he was haunted by something. In his day, surgery and childbirth were suffered fully awake. The screams from the operating theatres were something no one who heard them ever forgot.
Simpson was determined to find something better. On a November evening in 1847, he and two colleagues sat in his dining room after dinner, sniffing various chemicals to see what they did. They uncovered a bottle of chloroform. Within minutes all three were unconscious on the floor. When Simpson came round beneath the table, his first thought was not alarm. It was triumph. This, he realised, was far stronger and better than anything tried before.
He was right. Chloroform transformed medicine almost overnight. For the first time, women could be spared the worst agony of a difficult birth, and surgeons could work on a patient who felt nothing. There was fierce opposition from those who said pain was meant to be endured, especially in childbirth. Simpson fought them with scripture and science both, and he won. When Queen Victoria accepted chloroform for the birth of her son in 1853, the argument was effectively over.
He was knighted, honoured across the world, and mourned by enormous crowds when he died. A poor baker's boy from Bathgate had lifted a burden of suffering off the whole human race.
Every person who has ever gone under for an operation and woken with the pain already behind them owes a quiet debt to a Scot who once passed out on his own floor, and called it the best night's work of his life.

A ship arrived with oranges too bitter to sell. A grocer's wife refused to let them go to waste.
In 1797, a Spanish ship carrying a cargo of Seville oranges was forced to shelter in Dundee harbor during a storm. The oranges were too bitter for the local market, and the ship's captain sold them off cheaply just to recoup something from the load.
James Keiller, a local grocer, bought the cargo, uncertain what to do with it. His wife Janet is credited with the solution: boiling the bitter oranges down with sugar into a thick, tangy preserve, adapting an old Scottish tradition of marmalade-making that had previously used quince rather than citrus.
The Keiller family began producing and selling it commercially soon after, and Keiller's became the first company in the world to mass-produce orange marmalade in jars, turning a spoiled cargo into a Dundee institution that spread across the British Empire.
