Timothy James Bird

Work is combining moving image with set design. Home is a boat with a low ceiling. I am also rather bald, so both = joy, but each hurts my head sometimes!

@ahacreatives @Rosetheatre delighted to hear they had a good time. :)

[Timothy James Bird @Tim0thyjbird]

@tinyfiresltd Well hurrah! And Thank You. :-)

[Timothy James Bird @Tim0thyjbird]

@tinyfiresltd I very much hope #MotherSaid is an example of when video on stage works and has place.

[Timothy James Bird @Tim0thyjbird]

@tinyfiresltd When it doesn't fit, it just looks like a rubbish bolt on gimmick which someone though would be cool.

[Timothy James Bird @Tim0thyjbird]

@tinyfiresltd When it fits into the overall visual and narrative language, video can be terrific.

[Timothy James Bird @Tim0thyjbird]

@tinyfiresltd Most important, though, I think, is always to question whether video is the right approach for any particular piece of theatre

[Timothy James Bird @Tim0thyjbird]

@tinyfiresltd You need a variety of skills, with video technology, with content making and the ability to collaborate with others.

[Timothy James Bird @Tim0thyjbird]

@tinyfiresltd Haha - I often say 'never do video and theatre'! Partly a joke, but it reflects the fact that it's no easy role.

[Timothy James Bird @Tim0thyjbird]

@tinyfiresltd An installation vibe which reflects the way in which the text distills certain key moments in the characters' lives.

[Timothy James Bird @Tim0thyjbird]

@tinyfiresltd ... but mostly, I'd like to think that the TVs / video design lend a sculptural / installation vibe to the look of the piece.

[Timothy James Bird @Tim0thyjbird]

@tinyfiresltd The TVs also allow a small amount of scene titling for when we really jump about a lot.

[Timothy James Bird @Tim0thyjbird]

@tinyfiresltd The fragmented approach reflecting both the multiple and non-sequential times of the scenes. The TVs help us hint at era.

[Timothy James Bird @Tim0thyjbird]

@tinyfiresltd The core design context was to create a partly abstract environment to contain the drama.

[Timothy James Bird @Tim0thyjbird]

@tinyfiresltd So, I proud that the TVs work at all! But I'm also pleased at how they support the storytelling without overshadowing, I hope.

[Timothy James Bird @Tim0thyjbird]

@tinyfiresltd Making analogue TVs play nicely in a digital environment is always a challenge (thanks for much help from Lucy Ockenden)!

[Timothy James Bird @Tim0thyjbird]

@tinyfiresltd Also, this project gave me the opportunity to collaborate with a great Creative Team and help to support a brilliant cast.

[Timothy James Bird @Tim0thyjbird]

@tinyfiresltd #MotherSaid is a terrific piece of writing, which is often the first indication that the show will be good and interesting.

[Timothy James Bird @Tim0thyjbird]

@tinyfiresltd For #MotherSaid Signe Beckman's telly based stage, made me think of Fluxus artist Nam June Paik (https://t.co/howcAxvLFB)

[Timothy James Bird @Tim0thyjbird]

@tinyfiresltd For designing in general I usually find a particular set of references or inspirations which inform an approach to a show.

[Timothy James Bird @Tim0thyjbird]

@tinyfiresltd As a video designer, I've always been very influenced by video artist Bill Viola https://t.co/481s5lo6wx
