Yep. Some people with very neutral or supinating strike zero issue. Could likely wear them down until the air bubbles burst.
Problematic for ankles that pronate more than typical and also for many with knee or hip issues due to the lateral play /instability every time the foot lands. Less of a problem at faster paces but on slow
runs the instability can be very noticeable.
Ha sorry that was tongue in cheek I knew it was not for aesthetics.
I just wanted more info because I’m here to scrounge as much free info I can from other peoples time
and effort measuring things to add to the small amount of time I have measuring things. I barely run now as I prefer to just get injured playing team sports badly so your mission, should you choose to accept, is to give the peeps lots of shoe run data to froth on. Or send me the data from your runs where you swap shoes between longer intervals and I’ll get the comparisons and charts sorted 👊
The NBA needs to get fun again.
As a fan returning after a long hiatus, today’s game is a little underwhelming for the fan due to amazing defence in the key and sheer player height eliminating a the closer range offensive magic of old. Instead we watch repetivr long range shoot offs.
Two ways to fix it:
1) The "Sub-6ft" League: Let's see a league for smaller players where raw speed and skill can actually shine—just like weight classes in MMA or boxing where a fan can marvel at the speed and skill of the smaller athletes. In doing so you also inspire 98% of the youth population who won’t be tall enough for the giants league. I’m convinced it won’t be an inferior product.
4-on-4 for the Giants League. Open up the floor, create space, and bring back that physical 80s/90s style NBA basketball.
The beauty of AI is you can simply swap
back and forth between shoes of different distance intervals, intensities etc. Get a few weeks / at least 4-5 sessions of data, throw it all
into AI to analyse and if there is a noticeable enough difference in efficiency it will find that for you.
Analysing biomechanics is simple to. I use a specific coaching app that’s helpful but you can just film yourself behind in slow motion on your treadmill. See how your body moves in shoes fresh out of the box and compare to the same shoes 100,200 or more miles in.
Even 60km of running we note a difference in the Alpha Fly. Responsiveness drops quick!
@Brady_H Agree. Even now my boys are 14, 11 and 8- same principle applies. Get them outside where they can throw shit- easy parenting. Parenting inside- very difficult
@MarkEvans_17@Brady_H@ketone Got it. However ‘ketosis’ refers to the livers production of ketones not adding in exogenous ketones which is why I’m perplexed.
The classic 'hop test' for returning to run post achilles or calf injury makes zero sense to me.
Off the back of the classic old man injury, torn gastrocnemius doing classic old man things; trying to play basketball after 20 years of not playing. A sports doctor and 1 out of 2 of the physiotherapists I chatted to advised me to do the 'hop test' before returning to slow run/walks.
It seemed illogical to me that you would something as high risk as repeat single leg hops to get back to something like very slow jogging. Turns out, at least in my biased way of looking at things to feel correct, that it is.
Baxter et al. found peak Achilles load:
Running: 5.2× body weight (not slow running either- self selected pace in the study)
Single-leg hop: 6.7 x body weight.
Forward/lateral hop: 7.3 x body weight.
I have zero expertise on this topic so open to suggestions of what would be a better pre run test.. However, I would have thought anything lower stress movement (increase load calf raises etc?) than hopping so that and slightly lower stress than running so you can progress through the tests in a logical way reducing the chance of re-injury.
@Brady_H@HankFrank Although just saw Dexa scans are often $400USD in the US compared $60 in Australia so maybe not a good option for US based athletes. The price of freedom. 😜
Great post Hank. For what it’s worth having made all the weight loss mistakes and a few successful cuts that with most of my athletes, they’ll typically training through the heavier load phases at 2-3% more body fat than optimal race % (for those we’ve clearly established from longer term trends what the optimal fat% is.)
From 3 weeks out as lighter recover days increase, I’ll use those days to be at a caloric deficit and drop the final weight. I don’t really ever encourage caloric deficit days on high stress training days anymore because of all the reasons Brad refers to.
Coaches are all scared to have the conversations on weight these days for understandable reasons but physics doesn’t lie, lighter, ‘can’ be better if it’s done in the right way. Many blame a low fat % as their cause of sickness and injury but in many cases it’s more they got to that fat % not necessarily the end result.
To note, I don’t let our athletes take weight on the scales to judge whether they’re at optimal fat % for racing due to the quite significant blood volume changes depending on how much heat stress is included in the prep. Ie- I would go to Hawaii for a training camp, train my arse off and come back heavier despite my ribs clearly showing I was leaner post camp due to the blood volume increase.
We do repeat Dexa scans. The more objective breakdown helps me encourage some athletes to consume more at a similar number to who I might push to lean up more on the right days. For the athlete that needs to drop muscle bulk not body fat to perform faster that’s a whole other strategy. A much harder one that I don’t implement anywhere near the specific race building period.
Hit me with your funniest most frustrating local council story.
Mine as of opening a letter this morning..
we battled the council to keep a tree in our backyard they wanted removed. With significant time and money spent as is always the way in trying to achieve anything with council, we were able to keep the tree.
Now we’re facing a fine because that tree was pruned slightly without council permission.
Tried to repair a big cut to a tubeless tyre yesterday thinking I would do an instructional on how to do it. All the typical ways failed. Final option before ditching the vid surprised me. https://t.co/UCwNudCicu
The over 60 year olds in Australia make up 23% of the population but own nearly 2/3rds of the rental market. It can seem quite futile making noise about the crazy inequity faced by younger Aussies (30 and under especially) today and the lack of policy change to prevent boomers owning 2+ houses with minimal tax disincentives to do so. However I’ll keep banging the drum occasionally in the hope more people do and the very slim chance more than a handful of politicians decide to start moving things in the right direction.
One of the nicest guys I coach was hit by a car on Sunday and will be in ICU for some time yet with many injuries to overcome. While he’s still incubated the initial brain function signs seem very positive. Thales is 28 years old from Brazil and living in Australia with his partner. Without his income in the coming months it’s going to be extremely tough for them. If there is anyway you can donate any amount it all adds up to make such a difference. https://t.co/lBwLgsjOhW
