The 'Call of Duty tax' means games media doesn’t cover COD the way it used to, Activision says:
"I think we get the coverage, but we call it the ‘Call of Duty tax’", says Chief Marketing Officer Tyler Bahl.
"And I think in a lot of ways, Call of Duty has been here for a very long time. And with that, you know, people sometimes forget that there’s so much work that goes into making these games. There’s 4,500 employees here that are trying to make the best possible experience."
"So that huge audience, I think sometimes gets overlooked, or just becomes status quo. And I think the craft that goes into these games, and the dedication from the teams was something that we wanted to show this year with the marketing."
"Last year, disappointing performance was blamed on Game Pass inclusion," he wrote. "Now, it’s media. When MW4 disappoints it’ll be GTA’s fault. Meanwhile, ports of Black Ops and Black Ops II were among the biggest new releases of the year."

Based on score predictions from our social followers, the aggregate Metascore prediction for Gears of War: E-Day is [88.0] https://t.co/WwOqr3h0YI Check back in just under 3 hours to see how close we are...
@TheGhostOfHope Agreed. But also, realistically, how much time would the jury have to even play GTA 6 to vote on this? Like let's say they start voting on Nov 25th, that's still too close. IMO they should delay voting to December 1-3rd right before the show to give the game a fair shot
So I REALLY riled up Xbox console obsessives yesterday, hey?
I got literal death threats - the most I've had so far - and claims that I hate Xbox, for saying E-Day should come to PS5 (without also saying Saros and Wolverine should go multiplatform).
Xbox is in a VERY different situation to PlayStation, and for the record:
- Saros and Wolverine are single-player only. Gears is built around online Versus, co-op, and Horde, and E-Day's new Horde Siege is PvE. Those modes need a player base to stay alive, and more platforms = more players in lobbies.
- I think multiplayer games should be multiplatform, full stop. That includes Helldivers 2, Marvel Tokon, Concord (lmao), E-Day, and anything multiplayer for PS Studios. Helldivers 2 going to Xbox was GREAT for that community, and I want that for Gears, too. Console warring, be damned.
- Xbox already puts its games on Steam, which isn't the Xbox ecosystem either. If it's any consolation, I think Saros should come to Steam later, too.
- A PS5 version of E-Day was almost done but cancelled. Meanwhile, Xbox is laying people off to cut costs, including at The Coalition, while sitting on a port that could make it money during this reset.
- Gears isn't going to sell Xbox consoles. That ship has sailed, and it's never coming back. My view is that Xbox is keeping the faithful happy with a couple of sacrificial lambs now as the company moves them over to a unified Windows ecosystem via Helix. Sorry if that opinion annoys you, but that's my read.
So yeah, I still think E-Day should come to PlayStation. And no, that isn't me picking a side in the cOnSoLe WaRs. I'm an analyst, I play games on all platforms, and I'm not part of that shite (unlike the death threat brigade).
The nuts part is that I'm a pretty big Gears and Xbox fan. Hell, during the Activision Blizzard buyout negotiations, I actually consulted for Xbox. I own a Series X, and I'll be playing E-Day on it tomorrow. Not that it matters (or impacts my analysis, clearly), but I've actually enjoyed Xbox exclusives more than PlayStation ones this year. There's an Xbox game in my GOTY top 5 and no PlayStation ones, and now that I've played Wolverine, with nothing else Sony on the 2026 horizon, it'll stay that way.
Xbox is clearly shifting away from console and towards other ecosystems, and I think Gears should be part of that. Hilariously, I've probably played more Xbox games than a lot of the death threat crew (71K+ gamerscore, cringe lol).
Enough with the death threats lol.
Gears of War: E-Day has sold 120K copies on Steam for nearly $7M (@alineaanalytics estimates)
It’s sold under 20K in the last six weeks despite launching this week in early access, so the pre-launch curve is soft (but it’s increasing a bit).
Gears is a far more niche IP than Call of Duty (450K Steam copies pre-sold), of course. Launch-aligned, E-Day has already sold more than double what Halo: Campaign Evolved did on Steam, but it’s well behind Wardogs (which was on 567K at this point pre-launch, versus Gears‘ 120K, and roughly triple the revenue).
Realistically, in this window, 1M on Steam this year for E-Day is a stretch, and most of the Xbox revenue will be eaten up by Game Pass. That said, some superfans will cough up the extra $30 to play earlier.
In my view, they shouldn't have cancelled that PlayStation port. It would have added some much-needed extra revenue, the port was reportedly already in the works, and Gears isn't necessarily a console-seller anymore.
I can see a port coming at some point.
Resident Evil Requiem has now passed $500 million in total revenue, with 8.5 million copies shipped across PC, PS5, and Xbox Series X/S. But only 8.6% of that 8.5 million (around 731,000 copies) were sold for Xbox consoles.

@tomwarren Tom, we are very happy with GTA VI pre-orders. The title is breaking records for XBOX, we expect even more records will be broken throughout the fall, and our internal analysis shows our share of pre-orders to be matching our share of the console market.
My opinion can't be wrong because the only thing that matters in the equation is my opinion. Everything else from anyone else is just static or noise.
I have never been one of those see which way the wind is blowing or what the crowd says first to decide what I like.
