🐯 Timescale is now TigerData! 🚀
Eight years ago, we started as a PostgreSQL-based time-series database. But innovation never stands still—and neither have we.
Today, we proudly unveil @TigerDatabase, marking our evolution into the fastest and most powerful PostgreSQL database, purpose-built for modern transactional, analytical, and AI-driven workloads.
🌟 Why TigerData?
We’ve grown far beyond our initial identity. From handling early renewable energy use-cases to powering Bloomberg’s critical geotemporal data, our customers showed us we're not just the best in time-series—we're the best in PostgreSQL, period.
🔑 Our Journey Highlights:
- 2017: TimescaleDB introduces groundbreaking hypertables.
- 2019: Native columnar compression; our cloud service launches.
- Recent innovations: 2500x faster distinct queries, 8x more efficient Boolean storage, and ultra-fast queries on high-cardinality data.
🚀 Customer Impact:
- Bloomberg leveraged us for massive geotemporal datasets.
- Renewable energy utilities replaced Redis to efficiently monitor operations.
🤝 Community Commitment:
Our core remains open-source, including the beloved TimescaleDB extension. This rebrand changes nothing about our dedication to our community and customers.
🌐 Looking Ahead:
Exciting innovations await:
- Deeper lakehouse integrations.
- AI-native features.
- Enhanced scalability and unmatched performance.
We are not just renaming; we're recommitting—to deliver on our mission of building the fastest Postgres, and to give our customers speed without sacrifice.

Self-hosting @TimescaleDB for a critical app: ~1.5–3 full-time engineers, 3–4 to staff on-call, 2–4 engineer-weeks/yr for upgrades.
Your team can do it. That was never the question.
The question is what they're NOT building while they do. https://t.co/XwdbNvxjA0

Surviving the physical world is a data problem.
Machines throw off huge telemetry. Some you need in real time, some stays at the edge, some you keep for regulators (nuclear: 30 years).
Treat the data layer as core infra before fleet scale.

Wide-table-per-asset fails under a UNS: it encodes identity in column names. Rename a tag, run a migration.
Surrogate key in the namespace table fixes it. A rename is one UPDATE. History stays intact.
Schema follows from constraints: https://t.co/8DXOnUBTUw
you tune postgres, buy a few months, then the sensor data catches up and you're back where you started. the optimization treadmill is real.
june 30 i'm co-hosting a workshop where we skip the slides and just build a real IoT pipeline on tiger cloud. working instance in an hour.

"What should a drone do when a police helicopter approaches it?"
Asked at a Physical AI dinner we hosted. A room full of people who deploy drones and robots for a living. Nobody had a clean answer.
The thing that stumped them wasn't the model. It was safety, regulation, ops, and the data underneath all of it.
The model is what everyone watches. The deployment is decided by everything around it. Nuclear retention requirements run 30 years, which makes most storage strategies look adorable.
Hien Phan and Noah Hein wrote up the whole argument. Worth your time if you build machines that leave the lab.
CERN operates some of the most complex infrastructure humanity has ever built.
And the infrastructure that accelerates protons runs on data.
Together with @Siemens, @TimescaleDB helps power 800+ control systems supporting the ATLAS, CMS, LHCb, and ALICE experiments, along with the infrastructure behind them: electrical grids, cryogenics, vacuum systems, cooling, ventilation, radiation monitoring, gas distribution, machine protection, and more.
Proud to play a small role in enabling both fundamental science and the systems that make it possible.
