📌 Final version of my review paper on the definition of #SexualSelection is out in @BehavEcol.
I discuss potential limitations of a recently advocated definition and propose an alternative one.

Big news! 🎉 My first PhD chapter has been published in @PLOSBiology, and it just made the cover! 🐦🌍Perfect time to dive into the key findings from our global study on sexual selection in birds. 👇

I am loving the @EvolLetters by G. Moggioli. This issue has 3 articles about the Darwin-Bateman paradigm. Lehtonen & Parker https://t.co/QdKJrLFMKC provide theory, w/ comments by @timjanicke https://t.co/QnG9EBHWb1 and Mokos et al. https://t.co/AM52bwPnyq
Final version of this thing now published in @PLOSBiology, so ... some weekend reading. 🧵
Sexual selection (SS) is a major strand of evolutionary theory, but how and why it varies across species at global scales is poorly known. 1/9

Does vegetation structure shape animal vocalisations? A meta-analysis testing for phenotypic and evolutionary responses suggests that the acoustic adaptation hypothesis is not universally valid across birds, amphibians, and mammals.
Kudos to @brbbfreitas for the terrific work!
📌Just published: "Meta-analysis of the acoustic adaptation hypothesis reveals no support for the effect of vegetation structure on acoustic signalling across terrestrial vertebrates"

How and why does #SexualSelection vary geographically? @ra_barber@ja_tobias &co study 10,671 #bird species, revealing that avian sexual selection varies latitudinally, is explained by temperature seasonality & other #climate-related factors #PLOSBiology https://t.co/JTgE7ndIDG

Super happy with our new collaborative paper in the Neotropics! We examined how climatic variability affects sexual selection for nuptial gifts. Congrats Camila for this awesome research 🙌🏻 and the fantastic work of all authors

Experimental study suggests that sperm competition in hermpahroditic flatworms favours individuals that produce sperm of intermediate size:

Does the inherent sex difference in gamete size drive sex roles? In a recent @EvolLetters opinion piece, @TimJanicke reflects on recent theoretical and empirical advances in understanding how anisogamy shapes sexual differentiation.

Delighted to share my thoughts on the latest theoretical and empirical work exploring the evolutionary foundations of sex differences in #SexualSelection. Out now in @EvolLetters.

In an attempt to be explicit about the ultimate target of intra-sexual competition, I propose to define sexual selection as competition for access to reproductive resources provided by potential mating partners.

I argue that the nature of pre-copulatory competition does not depend on whether individuals compete for gametes or any other resources accessed through mates.
Instead, both sexes compete for a package of resources including gametic and non-gametic resources.

#SexualSelection and #speciation – unpublished data? For a #metaanalysis of comparative studies testing for a relationship between sexual selection and speciation, we are looking for unpublished data or studies with a different focus that might go undetected. Please get in touch!
Many thanks for encouragement and inspiring discussions to @kokkonutter, @JTonnabel, Patrice David and Beatriz Alvarez. Also to Sin-Syue Li for providing his beautiful picture of copulating painted snipes
Not much interested in definitions? Thought I was neither, but a recently proposed definition of #SexualSelection kept me pondering. Happy to share my thoughts (and another alternative definition) in an invited review in @BehavEcol
