Here’s another helpful and riveting conversation about the ethics of organ donation! On Relevant Radio’s “Trending with Timmerie,” Timmerie Geagea interviewed Dr. John DiCamillo, bioethicist and President of the National Catholic Bioethics Center. “The reality on the ground is that the tests that are being done for brain death are not actually telling us whether there is complete and irreversible cessation of all functions of the entire brain.” The US legal standard for brain death — and what the Catholic Church has said might be legitimate — is whole brain death: the irreversible cessation of all functions of the entire brain. But what the American Academy of Neurology has been saying for years is that it’s okay for people with continuing brain function to be declared “dead.” The interview also highlights the lack of informed consent for people registering as organ donors: right now, people are agreeing to donate on the basis of a noble intention — with no information about what their registration actually means. Dr. DiCamillo described a neurologist friend of his, a doctor with professional insight into how death is being declared, who carries his own wallet card with detailed instructions on how he wants his death declaration to be handled before organ donation.
