This week in Virginia history, July 21, 1861 the first Battle of Bull Run or First Manassas is fought 30 miles West of DC and just north of what is now the city of Manassas. Under political pressure to end the war quickly Union General McDowell was tasked with capturing the CSA capital in Richmond.

However, Brigadier General PGT Beauregard’s Confederate troops met them at Bull Run. Federal troops won the morning until General Thomas Jackson, who would earn his nickname this day, rallied Confederate troops to create a line on the eastern hill top. Jackson’s forces held the line as reinforcements arrived. The Union army is scattered in retreat. The Confederate troops are also too scattered to pursue.

All told, there were just shy of 5000 casualties. After First Bull Run, both sides began to recognize how difficult this war would be.
