Don Mattingly would be the only candidate to manage the Yankees who has both (a) the veneration of lifelong Yankee fans over age 60, who remember his career and the dark times; (b) the veneration of lifelong Yankee fans over age 35 who remember the Torre Dynasty and the perennial winning culture; and (c) actual recent big league managerial experience.

Every single person who bleeds pinstripes would be rooting for Donnie Baseball to finally get his World Series ring, every player in that clubhouse would play their ass off for him, and he would bring a great combination of real world experience and open-mindedness into that role.
