Did you know 5 June is #TimorLeste’s #NationalDayoftheSea? In 2026 we will celebrate our first-ever National Day of the Sea! This momentous day recognises the ocean’s vital role in our nation’s sustainable development of the unique way of life of the Timorese people.
The LMBO attended (28-29/04) 17th #ASEAN Regional Forum Inter-Sessional Meeting on #MaritimeSecurity, held in #Jakarta, #Indonesia. The meeting was co-chaired by Indonesia, the #USA and #India, to discuss evolving maritime security challenges and strengthen regional cooperation.
#TimorLeste and #Indonesia concluded the 3rd round of formal maritime boundary negotiations, in #Singapore from 27–29/04/2026. The 3-day meeting saw constructive and sincere engagement, leading to meaningful progress being made. The 4th round will be held in August in Indonesia.
🇹🇱delegation, led by the LMBO, participated as an observer in the 54th JWG-DOC (the 54th Joint Working Group Meeting on the Implementation of the Declaration on the Conduct of Parties in the South China Sea), held in Beijing, China, 17-18 April 2026.

LMBO lead the #TimorLeste delegation to the 52nd and 53rd Joint Working Group Meetings on the Declaration on the Conduct of Parties in the South China Sea and the Code of Conduct, in #Singapore (26-27/02) and in #Thailand (9-11/03), with officials from all #ASEAN Member States.
Reps from the Ministry of Tourism and Environment, Commerce and Industry, Education, Agriculture, Livestock, Fisheries and Forestry, Ataúro Administrative Authority, and LMBO held the first meeting (17/03) to begin preparations for the inaugural National Ocean Day on 5 June 2026.
LMBO’s #BlueEconomy Project Officer, Mateus Pereira, scholarship fellows from the Ministry of Tourism and Environment, and private sector reps traveled to Australia to participate (16-27/02) in the Australia Awards Fellowship program on Fostering Prosperity in the Blue Economy.

The new Portuguese Ambassador to Timor-Leste, H.E. Duarte Bué Alves, visited (24/02) the Land and Maritime Boundary Office (LMBO) for an introductory meeting to discuss priority areas of potential cooperation between #Portugal and #TimorLeste on the #BlueEconomy
The LMBO presented (20/02) to the Council of Ministers the Blue Economy Policy and Action Plan (2025–2035), a draft Decree-Law to establish a framework for marine spatial planning, and a draft Resolution on the Ocean Satellite Account. All were approved #BlueEconomy#TimorLeste.
The LMBO led #TimorLeste delegation to the 25th ASEAN–China Senior Officials’ Meeting on the Implementation of the Declaration on the Conduct of Parties in the South China Sea and the 51st Joint Working Group Meeting, held from 30 January to 1 February in Cebu, the Philippines.
Ataúro Island’s communities are taking concrete actions to reduce plastic waste and protect the ocean and marine life that sustain them. Communities collected >400 kg of plastic and sent it to the Caltech Group in #Dili for recycling into products, including pavers and furniture.
Students from Dili's Portuguese School visited (30/01) PM Xanana Gusmão in the Government Palace to sing “As Janeiras”, traditional and joyful Portuguese New Year’s songs. This is a tradition where people visit others in the 1st month of the year to sing and share good wishes.
The Movimentu Leitura ba Transformasaun Sosiál, engaged children (12/01) on the importance of the ocean and all its creatures. The children read and coloured the 'My Sea, My Timor' book to learn about the vital role of the ocean in Timor-Leste’s sustainable development 🇹🇱🌊🪸🐳
LMBO signed a Protocol of Cooperation in 2024 with the Caltech Group for the collection, recycling, and treatment of plastic bottles collected from the ‘Blue Fish’ installation, opposite the Government Palace in Dili, preventing marine pollution & part of a circular #blueeconomy

#TimorLeste and #Indonesia have concluded the 2nd round of formal maritime boundary negotiations in #Yogyakarta, Indonesia, held from 8 to 10 December 2025. This round follows the 1st formal negotiations in #Dili on 19 to 20 August 2025. A 3rd round is scheduled for early 2026.
