@ArrantPedantry @ElannaHeda I try to always ask when someone does something like this. Of course, it's often my kids, or a student taking a linguistics class from me.
@juliannemdoner @kirbyconrod Four years later, I was cycling full-tilt and someone opened the door of their parked car. I flew over the door and landed on the road several metres further on. Got up, straightened my bike out, and carried on. Mild road rash on my elbow; otherwise no damage. #fortunefavours ...
@juliannemdoner @kirbyconrod That's how it goes. I got my worst cycling injury while traveling at crawling speed on campus on a beautiful summer day. I was 20. #gracefulandathletic
@juliannemdoner@MaureenKosse I think I recently heard "driver's left" on the Edmonton light rail transit.
That seems more natural and less creepy than "my left", which seems to be an attempt to embody that disembodied voice from whatever metaphysical dimension my brain wanted to put it before. :shudder:
@StobiesGalaxy You noticed that too, huh? Yup, best #StarTrek yet. Best protagonists. Best villains. Best "minor" characters. Best stories. (Speaking as a decades-long fan of the franchise).
Mary Shelley did try to warn us about hubristic STEM bros who make strange, impulsive experiments and then watch helplessly as their creation destroys itself at the expense of ordinary people.
Trying something different: I'm adding the description as alt text for the images, rather than in the body of the tweet, for these ones. Don't know if taking a picture actually helps. It seems more personal somehow. Feedback welcome.
We condemn the ON Gov’s Bill 28, which has violated 55,000 CUPE members’ rights to collective bargaining and to strike. We join @CAUT_ACPPU, and voices in the broader labour movement across Canada, in denouncing these actions. https://t.co/gth1vxbTZR
IPA character of the week: [ɞ] open-mid central rounded vowel.
In a previous century, this could have been an emoticon for a heart. Too bad we have a whole new typographical technology to make it obsolete! 💔
