Honoured to be one of more that 70 Independent Councillors who signed a letter to Independent Members of the Oireachtas this morning. We are prepared to stand up and be counted to make sure our constituents will have a choice at the ballot box.
Dear ...... We write to ask you to nominate Maria Steen on the basis that we and a very large number of our constituents wish to have the choice of voting for her.
Sinn Fein have declared for Catherine Connolly, so she is now the preferred candidate of all parties of the left. Fine Gael and Fine Fail candidates will not be the preferred option for a very large number of voters who voted for us.
Exercise of the Party Whip and instructions to vote against Independent candidates has resulted in a closed door in the vast majority of Councils.
So we are now depending on a handful of Senators and TDs to restore the equilibrium so that we the people can exercise our franchise. The personal preference of any one Senator, TD or Councillor is irrelevant. We are only facilitators in all of this.
So again, we ask you to be a strong voice for Independents, and nominate Maria Steen.

The government are NOT some elite, separate entity. They are meant to be the embodiment of the people's will! Our constitution is clear: the people are the ultimate decision-makers, and these so-called representatives are supposed to be our voice.

But what do we have instead? The Government is answering to unelected bureaucrats in the international community quicker than they answer to the Irish people. The government is not the collective voice of unelected bureaucrats in the international community.

It's time to put some constitutional manners on these out of control politicians.

Get registered to vote. We have only one chance with elections over the coming months. It's make or break time because the next General Election will define our path for another 5 years. It's crucial we get it right.

BREAKING:

France has declared a state of emergency in New Caledonia. 4 people have been killed in widespread riots.

The unrest is being likened to civil war with indigenous Kanak people fighting against ethnic French and other minorities living on the islands.

The Kanaks protest against a law passed by the French parliament that would give French residents who have lived in the territory for 10 years voting rights in local elections.

40% of the islands population consists of Kanaks.

New Caledonia has been part of France since 1853
