“And the moment that you subject a prisoner to the clangs, bangs, crashes and jingles of the prison environment or the manner in which you enclose them into a cell where that air isn't moving, if you put them into a place where they have absolutely no nose lids or earlids, that they can't shut out the environment of the prison and every time they are subject to a sensory experience that they themselves cannot curate because it is being imposed upon them, is absolutely, absolutely a communication of the punishment that they are experiencing in terms of the prison."— Jason Warr

🎙️ New Episode Alert: Locked Up Living 🗝️✨

Don't miss the latest episode of *Locked Up Living*. This week, we dive into the often-overlooked world of sensory experiences in prison environments with our insightful guests, criminologist @WarrCriminology and sensory experience researcher @KateHerrity .

Kate and Jason peel back the layers of prison life that go beyond what meets the eye. Here are three key takeaways from our compelling conversation:

- 🔇 **The Sound of Silence**: Learn how silence is more than just a lack of noise. It's a profound communicator within the bars, signaling everything from the mundane to the precursor of danger. Our guests illustrate how shifts in the sonic landscape can indicate significant changes in prison safety and dynamics.

- **The Power of Touch**: We explore the complex role of touch in the prison setting, where power dynamics, access control, and personal boundaries collide. Discover how the absence of touch can affect well-being, and how inappropriate contact can have lasting impacts on both prisoners and staff.

- 🌬️ **Beyond Sight**: From the stressors of confinement in Victorian prisons to the deep impact of the sensory environment on staff and inmates alike, our guests share personal stories and research insights. Uncover how sensory experiences shape the health and behaviour of those living behind bars, often mirroring the institution's attitude towards human dignity.
