MEMSIE STAKES 2026| THE TIPSTA REVIEW 🏇

The first Victorian Group 1 of the spring gave us plenty to take forward, with the Memsie shaping as a race worth following closely as these horses progress deeper into their preparations.

Beiwacht was excellent. He found a favourable position, travelled comfortably and was able to establish a break before several of the key runners behind him had properly built into their runs. The race setup certainly suited him, but he still had to capitalise, and a quality horse was able to do exactly that. He was clearly forward enough to perform first-up following the minor setback that kept him out of the Winx Stakes, and this was a strong return.

Cosmic Crusader was one of the more interesting performances from a future form perspective. He was our top selection and, despite not getting the result, we took plenty from the run. Won't be jumping off at all of the back of that performance.

He ended up much further away from Beiwacht than we would have liked, which left him with an enormous amount of work to do once the race began to develop. Early in his run through the field he was then checked, pushed off balance and unsettled, interrupting his momentum before he had properly got going.

He had to balance again, continue building through his gears and was eventually taken extremely wide to find clear running. By then Beiwacht had established a significant advantage and Cosmic was effectively chasing from an almost impossible position.

Despite that, he still finished the race off extremely strongly into third. From a form perspective, we're treating the performance more favourably than the margin suggests. Had he been able to settle several lengths closer and build his run without interruption, we think he could have been considerably closer to the winner and potentially made the finish very interesting. There was enough there for us to remain very positive about him going forward.

Mr Brightside was another very encouraging performance. Returning from an extended break at nine years of age, there was naturally interest around where he now sits against Group 1 opposition. He was given a lovely ride, travelled well and continued to find through the line.

For a first-up performance after that amount of time away, it was an excellent foundation for his preparation. He should take improvement from it and certainly looked like a horse capable of remaining highly competitive at this level. There should be plenty of interest in where he heads second-up.

Jimmysstar was harder to assess. He entered the race with strong expectations after reportedly preparing extremely well and attracting significant market support, but he wasn't able to produce the performance many expected.

There wasn't an obvious race circumstance that completely explains the result, so we'll be interested to hear more from the stable over the coming days. He's demonstrated his quality plenty of times previously, and we're sure the team will be assessing the run closely before determining where they head next. For now, we'd rather wait for more information than draw a strong conclusion from one performance.

Overall, Beiwacht leaves the Memsie having confirmed his quality and readiness, while Cosmic Crusader and Mr Brightside both produced performances we think can be followed positively into their next assignments. Jimmysstar is one we'll reassess once there's more information around the run.

Importantly, it's still very early in the spring. Some of these horses were there to perform immediately, while others will have considerably bigger targets ahead and improvement to come as their preparations progress.

There were also several runs further down the field that were better or more informative than they might initially appear.
