July 16th 1966 -Tommy James And The Shondells started a two week run at #1 on the US singles chart with "Hanky Panky", a song first recorded by The Raindrops in 1963.

A Pittsburgh DJ had begun playing the two year old recording and regional record sales had reached over 80,000. James called the members of his now defunct band, but they were no longer interested.

When his original backing band (Tom and the Tornadoes) quit in 1965 after the release of "Hanky Panky," a desperate Tommy James found a Pittsburgh-area combo called the Raconteurs playing at a club in Latrobe, Pennsylvania. He asked them to become the new Shondells, and they agreed. This specific lineup—featuring Ron Rosman (keyboards), Mike Vale (bass), Joe Kessler (guitar), and Vinnie Pietropaoli (drums)—helped propel James to massive national stardom with hits like "I Think We're Alone Now" and "Mony Mony".

Took the kiddo to the Niles library. They have a great selection of music biographies. Gonna read about our home town boy, Tommy James and all his shenanigans. Listening to Crimson and clover over and over while I rip through this! Dream project in this town is to do a really cool Tommy James mural (gigantic size, right downtown).
