Reagan is rolling over in his grave. Iran’s nuclear ambitions were not curbed, and they have learned that threatening the Strait of Hormuz works and will undoubtedly leverage it in the future. Now, Iran gets to build brand-new infrastructure under this deal.
Before the war, the strait was open, Iran was being crushed by sanctions, and 13 service members were still alive. Now, 13 Americans are dead, families have paid billions at the pump, sanctions will be lifted, and the bombing has stopped. This is the worst foreign policy blunder in decades.
The US has circulated its version of the Memo of Understanding with Iran to G7 leaders in France. It’s as bad if not worse than expected.
— The moment it’s signed (Friday) sanctions on the export of Iran oil are lifted. So the regime can start replenishing its coffers immediately.
— The US commits to doing nothing to undermine or destabilise the Iranian regime (it started the war to remove it).
— The US specifically commits to ending its blockade of the Strait of Hormuz but Iran does not commit specifically to returning the Strait to toll/fee free transit exactly as before the war, with no Iranian control/regulation whatsoever .
— All sanctions against Iran will be dropped should phase two negotiations go well. And America will withdraw its forces from the region.
— The US ‘undertakes’ to work with Iran and Gulf allies to create a $300 billion reconstruction package for Iran. So America will now become a partner with the tyrants of Tehran, who Trump only recently wanted to overthrow, in rebuilding their economy.
— All matters related to Iran’s nuclear capabilities are kicked into the ‘final agreement’ in 60 days time (or longer if necessary).
— No mention of Iran’s ballistic missile capabilities or its financing of terrorist proxies.
And that’s just about it. When Trump insisted the war would only end with ‘unconditional surrender’ it never crossed my mind he meant his own.
This agreement is far worse than I expected. To reopen the strait— a strait that was open before the war— we and our partners are transferring billions to the autocrats. We get nothing else— no elimination of enriched uranium, missiles, or terrorist support. And to add one final gift, we agree to not help the Iranian people pursue their democratic aspirations. Just incredible.
There is a lot of “Paraguay isn’t very good” talk. Full stop.
Under Alfaro, they lost just once in WCQ and went 9 straight without defeat. They beat URG, Brazil, & Argentina.
They were one of the best defensive teams in the 🌎.
Paraguay isn’t bad.
#USMNT made them look bad.
@steady_drumbeat "In return for peace" -- as if ANY PALESTINIAN LEADER IN HISTORY has genuinely been interested in peace! I am a lifetime Dem, I've literally never voted for the GOP in my life, but the utter brain rot of the left elite as evidenced by Ta Nehisi here is why I'm now an independent

you're not paying for answers. you're paying for Claude to re-read its own homework 30 times
spent months blaming Anthropic for being greedy. turns out the problem was how I write prompts

@Srishtivishwak4@CharlotteFC Haha, Charlotte FC with the ultimate troll move—condolences to KitKat, then "here's 413,000 bars at our game."
Pure gold. Soccer + stolen chocolate = winning combo. Fans eating good Saturday. Break me off a piece! 🍫⚽
I could not agree more. I'm a lifelong democrat, I find most of what Trump does abhorrent, but the reaction on the left to what could be the freeing of 90 million Iranians and the dawn of New Middle East is stunning and disheartening. I'm politically homeless.
An American-Iranian Democrat destroys the Democratic Party for refusing to back the war on the Islamic Regime:
“It is imperative that the Democratic Party wake and gets past their dislike of Donald Trump…
This will be like ending the Soviet Union. The Berlin Wall. This is a transformational moment for human kind…
I am a huge Democrat. I am incredibly disappointed with my party. I do not see myself in them in this moment.”
@KamalaHarris I voted for you, and I despise Donald Trump. But it is a disgrace that you're speaking right now. This regime change war might unlock the key to a peaceful middle east + a two state solution with a Palestinian people not kidnapped by Iran-funded extremists. This is disheartening.
A few thoughts:
1) This attack should not have happened without Congressional authorization. This is no mere technicality -- it's the framer's foundational design for how the republic should wage war.
2) Khamenei's death is a great victory, but we've all been on this rollercoaster before. The U.S. and Israelis have taken out lots of leaders and rulers in these long wars.
3) I very very very much want the regime to fall, and I desperately want democracy to take root, but remember, we're ultimately relying in large part on civilian protesters (hopefully with the support of dissenting regime elements) to actually topple the regime.
4) If we rely on protesters (who possess magnificent courage), I'm worried we might see something like what happened to Iraqis who rose up against a defeated Saddam in 1991. It was a bloody massacre. That's a nightmare scenario.
5) Our forces have performed magnificently, and I'm hoping and praying that the Iranian response remains inept and ineffective. But it's dangerous to simply presume that it will.
6) If we take losses (or if we suffer economic disruption) that's when we'll see one of the consequences of failing to go to Congress. We're a divided country. Trump is a mercurial man.
7) Trump's temperament and character are one reason why it's silly to say, "If I'd support this under any other president, I should support this under Trump." He's not like any other president. Bad and dishonest leaders make me less confident in their plans.
8) If, however, the Iranian people can rally, if our attacks can prevent the regime from massacring civilians, then it will be a massive accomplishment and a great day for the U.S., Israel, and the world.
The Iranian people have the right to determine their own future. Germany is coordinating closely with the United States, Israel and partners in the region. We remain committed to peace and security in the region and to Israel’s security.
To you, Zohran Mamdani! You stayed quiet when we have faced massacre, when Islamic Republic assassins were sent here in New York to kill us, stay quiet now!
STOP lecturing us Iranians about peace.
I don’t feel safe in New York listening to someone like you, Mamdani, who sympathizes with the regime that killed more than 30,000 unarmed Iranians in less than 24 hours. You talk about “safety” of this beautiful city? Listen carefully; Safety without justice means nothing.
We Iranians do not allow you to lecture us about war while you had nothing to say when the Islamic Republic shot schoolgirls and blinded more than 10,000 innocent people in the streets. You were busy celebrating the hijab while women of my beloved country Iran were jailed and raped by Islamic Security forces for removing it. And NOW you find your voice to defend the regime? No. I will not let you claim the moral high ground.
The people of Iran want to be free. Where were you when they needed solidarity?
New York belongs to people who stand against terrorism not those who excuse it.
This city is stronger than fear.
Stronger than propaganda.
Stronger than you think.
