Divorce is difficult. And complex. But ultimately, it can be for the best.

My parents got divorced, and it was the best thing for both of them and for myself and my brother. They were unhappy, and (I assume, as I was incredibly young) our family unit was too. But once the decision was made, and it took a couple of years but my mother found Fred (my other Dad) and my Dad lived his best life as a serial bachelor (which he loved). I like to think my brother and I turned out okay too.

So, we can only wish for the best for Siya and Rachel Kolisi.

It is difficult to watch it unfold, especially when the Kolisis are not only in the public eye but part of the fabric of what the Springboks represent to South Africa. As Captain and “First Lady”, they carry a lot of weight. Heavy is the head that wears the crown.

It took about a millisecond after the announcement was made for the opinions and speculation to flood in. Social media has quickly become a “whodunnit” cesspool. Conversations around their why (not that it should matter to us) have taken centre stage. It’s unfortunately in our human nature. We call it “rubbernecking” past an accident. But you know what? That’s okay. These trending conversations shift as quickly as the wind. It will take a day or two but a new narrative will arrive to latch onto soon enough.

What’s fascinating to me is how they made the announcement.

Especially since I work in the media space (albeit good news but still news).

It was planned (I assume) but not how it would’ve been done 10 years ago, or even 5 years ago. Being in the public eye used to mean a PR machine had to manage every move. The “old” way would’ve been to align with a media house and let them tell the story for you. You know, send out that embargoed presser. Think Brad Pitt and Jennifer Aniston in 2005 or Johnny Depp and Amber Heard in 2016. But now, the new way is to control your own narrative through your social media. Miley Cyrus announced her breakup with Cody Simpson on an Instagram Live, and Austin Green confirmed his split with Megan Fox on his own podcast.

And this is why it interests me.

Because last night, when the Kolisi news broke, social media was the first source (of the news). People shared their post, and then news outlets started reporting on their post. But news outlets weren’t adding anything beyond what Siya and Rachel decided to share. The “Breaking News” and “Reaction” headlines followed. But the real news? That’s owned by them.

Siya and Rachel controlled their own narrative. They told their story on their own platform, on their own terms.

I think this shows how important our own social media is today. Even if you have just 10 followers, you must remember that you are your own news outlet. Please read that again. Everything you say matters. And if you wouldn’t put it on the front page of a media outlet, you shouldn’t put it on your socials.

So that’s my opinion on the matter. More so around the announcement.

With regard to their choice.

Divorce is undeniably tough, and there are always layers of complexity that most of us will never fully grasp from the outside. As we watch Siya and Rachel (and their family) go through this process, I think it’s important to approach it with empathy. The Kolisis have shared so much of their lives with us, and now, as they navigate this chapter, they deserve our understanding, not our judgment.

Let’s wish them the strength to find peace in the path ahead and hope that this decision leads them to brighter days, individually and as a family.
