In the 2020s, it has become common for representative K-pop artists in Korea such as BTS, Blackpink, and Seventeen to expand their activities to the world. It is accepted that the K-pop idol market has expanded with BTS's activities after singer PSYโs Gangnam Style, but there is more hidden contribution here. It's CL.
The situation is very different from now, where it is easier to access domestic music on Billboard as compared to 10 years ago. Although Psy's 'Gangnam Style' received global attention, it was very rare for domestic singers to be active abroad. Even in this contemporary situation, CL took the lead in declaring her debut in the United States and pioneering the market.
CL began her solo activities with her solo debut song 'The Baddest Female' in 2013. At that time, CL thought that she should go overseas further by encountering prejudices against Asians' global music activities.
In November 2015, CL released 'Hello Bitches' as her US debut pre-release song through the free music platform Soundcloud. After that, it was officially released in December and ranked first in the VIRAL50 rankings of the famous overseas music platform Spotify, and received attention from foreigners.
Her achievements shone when she entered the Billboard in 2016. The first Korean female solo singer to enter the US Billboard main single chart 'HOT 100' in October of that year with the single 'Lifted' released in August 2016. She also appeared on the popular late-night talk show 'The Late Late Show with James Corden' that year and conducted an interview and built awareness in the United States.
She, who laid the way for K-pop artists to expand overseas, suddenly had a hiatus for three years. After the end of the exclusive contract with YG Entertainment, her overseas activities entered a period of stagnation for a while. In 2021, when K-pop was attracting global attention, CL signed a contract with the British agency Satellite414 to which pop stars Beyonce and Adele belong. Starting with this, she began to shine her face at world-class events such as the Met Gala and iHeartRadio Music Festival.
Her overseas activities also became the opportunity for the reunion of group 2NE1. She was invited as a soloist to the Coachella Valley Music and Arts Festival stage in 2022, and gathered all the members and made a surprise appearance at the end. She said at the time, "The reason why I wanted to invite the members to Coachella is because I wanted to gather with my own strength and our strength before it was too late."
The public who cheered for the group stage raised their voices for 2NE1โs reunion which resulted them to resume group activities with 2024 2NE1 Concert โWELCOME BACKโ.
It's been 15 years since CL debuted as 2NE1 in 2009. There was a gap, but the public's interest in her steps has not stopped for 15 years. It is worth watching how the hidden contribution of K-pop globalization will affect this industry in the future.
