China has recently witnessed another deeply distressing case of animal cruelty.
A cat was subjected to human-inflicted sexual abuse and severe physical injuries. After being rescued and taken for emergency veterinary treatment, the cat ultimately did not survive. Rescuers documented the cat’s condition and the course of treatment.
But what is particularly concerning is this:
This may not be an isolated act committed by a single individual.
Earlier this year, Chinese media investigated and exposed the existence of online communities centered around the abuse of cats. According to those reports, participants connected with one another online, shared abusive content, and discussed such extreme acts within these communities.
Yes — communities, not simply one individual.
By early September, another severely injured cat was urgently taken for medical treatment.
According to the rescuers who documented this case, the cat was allegedly subjected to human-inflicted sexual abuse involving forced penetration, resulting in severe injuries.
Despite receiving medical care, the cat ultimately died.
We must, however, remain precise and responsible:
At present, there is no evidence directly linking this specific case to any particular online community.
At the same time, the existence of such online communities is not simply an unfounded rumor. Similar communities and their activities have previously been investigated and reported by the media.
This raises an even more disturbing question:
How many animals have already suffered before anyone ever found them?
When people who abuse animals can connect with one another online, form communities, exchange abusive content, and reinforce and normalize such extreme behavior among themselves,
this is no longer merely an issue of individual cruelty.
It is a broader animal-protection challenge involving online communities, the circulation of abusive content, platform responsibility, and the ability of authorities to investigate and intervene.
We call on online platforms and relevant authorities to:
Preserve all relevant evidence.
Thoroughly investigate these online communities.
Remove content that promotes, encourages, or glorifies animal abuse.
Investigate those who may be involved in creating and distributing such content.
Protect volunteers and individuals who provide information or assist in animal rescues.
And take meaningful measures to prevent similar tragedies from happening again.
At the same time, please do not disclose the names, contact information, addresses, or other identifying details of rescuers.
They are the people trying to save lives.
Their safety must be protected too.

This cat did not survive.
But the suffering she endured
must not be forgotten simply because she is gone.
