Ibn ʿUthaymīn رحمه الله said:

There are two ways of seeking Allah's forgiveness:

First: By asking for it directly with your words, such as saying, "O Allah, forgive me," or "Astaghfirullāh."

Second: By performing righteous deeds that bring about forgiveness, as the Prophet ﷺ said:

"Whoever says, 'Subḥānallāhi wa biḥamdih' one hundred times in a day will have his sins forgiven, even if they are as abundant as the foam of the sea."

Conditions to follow when making dua:

First praise Allah as He deserves, then salawat upon prophet ﷺ in the beginning, in the middle and at the end.

The prophet ﷺ said,

“Do not treat me like the water skin of the rider. The rider fills his water skin and then puts it down. Then, he picks up his possessions. Then, if he needs to drink, he drinks and if he needs to perform ablution, he performs it. If not, he leaves it. Rather, mention me at the beginning of your supplication, in the middle of it, and at the end.”

Shaykh Bakr Abu Zayd said,

“The best category of sending blessings upon the Prophet ﷺ is at the beginning of the du’aa’, in the middle and at the end. It is like wings for the du’aa’ with which it soars up to the clouds of the sky.”

(Tasheeh al-Du’aa’ (p. 23) 

The second condition is sending blessings upon him at the beginning and end of the du’aa’. 

The third condition is sending blessings upon him at the beginning.

Umar ibn al-Khattab, may Allah be pleased with him, said,

“Verily, the supplication is suspended between the heavens and the earth. Nothing ascends from it until you send blessings upon your Prophet, ﷺ.”

It’s important that you send salawat upon the prophet ﷺ when make dua to get response.

Ibn ‘Ata’ said,

“Supplications have pillars, wings, means, and times. If one completes its pillars, it becomes strong. If he conforms to its wings, it flies into the sky. If his supplication corresponds to its times, it succeeds. And if he takes its means, it is favoured. Its pillars are the presence of heart, etiquette, submission, humility, and the heart’s attachment to Allah and detachment from intermediary means. Its wings are sincerity. Its time is the early (pre-dawn) morning. Its means are prayers upon the Prophet ﷺ.”

May Allah accept all of our supplications.

The Messenger of Allāh ﷺ said: “No one upon the earth says;

• Laa Ilaaha Illaallaah • Wallaahu Akbar • Walaa Ḥawla Walaa Quwwata Illaa Billaah

Except that his sins will be expiated from him even if they were to be (abundant) like the foam on the surface of sea.”

[رواه الترمذي ٣٤٦٠ ، حسنه الألباني]

Note: The mentioned Ḥadeeth speaks of expiation of minor sins, as for major sins they require sincere repentance.

It is not permissible for a Muslim to hate life and despair of the relief and goodness that is with Allah.

Rather, it is obligatory for him to be patient with what he faces from the decrees of Allah.
