I am deeply concerned about the detention of HRDr Zhang Yi, arrested after showing a photo of the Dalai Lama during a visit to Sera Monastery in Lhasa. He remains detained on charges of “inciting separatism.”
Peacefully displaying the image of a religious leader cannot constitute a threat to national security. Separatism legislation must not be used to criminalize the exercise of freedom of expression, religion or belief, or legitimate human rights work.
I urge the Chinese authorities to review Zhang Yi’s detention and to release him immediately, given the serious concerns that his detention may be linked to the peaceful exercise of his right to defend human rights. Pending his release, his safety, due process guarantees, and access to his family and legal counsel must be fully respected.

The truth? They held peaceful vigils for victims of the 1989 Tiananmen Massacre. Each now faces up to 10 years in prison.
Chow Hang-tung, Lee Cheuk-yan, and all unjustly imprisoned activists should be freed.
The son of Wuhan activist Zhang Yi, who was recently charged with “inciting separatism” for showing a photo of the Dalai Lama in Lhasa, spoke to HRIC about his and his father's story over the past 37 years. Read the full piece here: https://t.co/71XjaypR62
