We were on a bus from Lagos to Benin on Friday evening when soldiers flagged us down at a checkpoint.

They pointed at one boy at the back. Dreadlocks, a rucksack, a new iPhone.

"Come down. Yahoo boy."

He was 23, a software developer travelling to resume a job in Benin. He showed them his work ID.

They said it could be fake.

He opened his laptop, and they said, "Which of these codes is for fraud?"

Nobody on the bus said a word at first.

Then an old woman by the window hissed and said, "Officer, I have been on this bus for five hours. That boy helped me carry my load.

He has not even lifted his phone to say hello to a girl."

A man in front added, "I'm a lawyer. Let me see your senior officer."
A pregnant woman said, "If you take him, you'll have to take me too, because I'm not sitting in this seat alone."

Within minutes, everybody was standing in the aisle.

The driver killed the engine and said, "Oga, I don't move without all my passengers."

The officer looked at the crowd, looked at the boy, and looked at his watch.

"Let him go."

The boy climbed back on the bus with shaking hands.

The old woman patted the seat beside her and gave him a piece of agbalumo.

He didn't say a word for the next hour. At Benin, he thanked all of us one by one.

Nobody on that bus knew each other.

But that evening, strangers stood in a bus aisle and made one boy's night end in his own bed instead of a cell.

A TRIBUTE TO DR. WILLIAM OKOYE

Today, I attended the funeral of a man I consider a true man of God, Dr. William Okoye, a man who dedicated his life fully and genuinely to the service of God and humanity.

Dr Okoye was a pioneer Pentecostal pastor in what is today Abuja, dating back to 1985. He later served as the Aso Rock Chaplain for eight years during the administration of President Olusegun Obasanjo.

What stood out to me about his life was that, despite his proximity to power, he remained steadfast and, by all accounts, committed to his faith and calling without allowing the trappings of public life to define him.

I also recalled our partnership during my time as Governor of Anambra State on a programme aimed at imparting virtues and values to young people. His commitment to raising a generation grounded in character and service was evident.

In my remarks, I described him as a man whose life was a testimony to the fact that it is possible to be close to power without being consumed by it, and to serve God and humanity with sincerity and integrity.

May God grant him eternal rest and comfort his family, church, and all those whose lives he touched. -PO
