I received surgery #3 on May 15th for SMAS, the largest, most intrusive surgery yet.

Oftentimes I get asked how I can trust in a God who would allow me to go through such horrible pain. I point to Genesis 3 and the fall of man, and that before sin entered the world, there was no pain. This was God’s intention. It was man who turned from that, and sin entered the world. Because of that, things like vascular compressions exist.

The pain that I have felt for so long pointed me to a humbling truth about 2 years ago - the weakness of my body and my physical depravity points to a much bigger issue- my spiritual depravity - specifically my sin. At the point in which I acknowledged my physical inability, the Lord was nudging my heart to realize my spiritual inability. When the gospel was preached to me for the first time, both of those truths clashed and I realized my desperate need for a savior due to my sin.

I found myself so caught up in this life prior to knowing Christ that it took being afflicted deeply to ever stop and truly ponder eternity in the depths of my soul. This led me to the reality that I would rather be afflicted here, and know my need for a savior than to live this life problem free and attempt to stand before God on my own righteousness.

God’s Word tells us that we are even blessed when we mourn (Matthew 5:4). That when we suffer, we are becoming more like Christ, the Son of Suffering. Only God could use something like this for good, and He has and will continue to. All Glory to the name of Jesus.

The more I read my Bible, the more I appreciate the alignment between the Old and New Testaments.

It proves that God never changes. His will, His ways, and His purposes remain the same through the ages. He is utterly consistent.

For example, when I read Ezekiel 34 today, my mind immediately went to 1 Peter 5. The early portions of both passages share the same theme, though Ezekiel delivers a declaration of judgment, while Peter delivers a set of instructions.

Peter tells the church elders to watch over God's flock as God's shepherds. Not under compulsion, but willingly. Not for what they will gain, but because they want to serve.

And in Ezekiel, we see how the shepherds of Israel didn't fulfill this requirement. They didn't act for the wellbeing of the sheep; they only cared about their gain.

Of them, God says: "You eat the curds, clothe yourselves with the wool and slaughter the choice animals, but you do not take care of the flock. You have not strengthened the weak or healed the sick or bound up the injured. You have not brought back the strays or searched for the lost."

Peter says not to "lord it over them" and God through Ezekiel reproves the shepherds for treating the sheep "harshly and brutally."

And so we see God's unchanging will in both Testaments: faithful shepherds who tend His sheep, faithful leaders who care for His church.

In Jesus, we see the perfect fulfillment of God's will: He is the Good Shepherd who lays down His life for the sheep (John 10:11) (Side note: our Lord Jesus told Peter to "feed my lambs" so it makes sense that Peter would stick to this metaphor.)

This is just one of many examples where the Old and New Testament echo each other. And it always deepens my awe at the Bible's cohesiveness and God's immutability.
