Twenty-five stray dogs have tested positive for rabies in the past two-and-half months in Coimbatore and suburbs. Veterinarians suspect an outbreak of the viral disease among community dogs in the city.

The authorities have identified 14 hotspots from where 49 dogs were captured since June following residents’ complaints to Coimbatore corporation’s helpline about “unhealthy and aggressive” dogs.

A team from an NGO, Mission Rabies, collected samples from brain tissues of the 45 carcasses and confirmed that 25 were infected with rabies. @Anushka__Juliet
