Mr. @BillOReilly, declaring that “Mexico is not a friend of the United States” may make for provocative television, but it reflects an outdated and ineffective understanding of a crisis that has taken hundreds of thousands of American and Mexicans lives.

Blaming Mexico is easy. Solving the problem requires intellectual honesty and shared responsibility.

The United States own public-health data show that the opioid epidemic did not begin in Mexico. The CDC identifies its first wave in the 1990s, driven by the massive overprescription of legal opioids within the United States; the second, beginning in 2010, involved heroin; and the third, beginning in 2013, was driven by illicitly manufactured fentanyl. Approximately 806,000 people died from opioid overdoses between 1999 and 2023.

That history matters. US citizens demand crisis, its pharmaceutical practices, its domestic distribution networks and its failures in prevention and treatment cannot simply be erased and reassigned to another country.

You demand forceful action inside México, when México has the best results against cartels in modern history. If we really want results, then apply that same determination inside the United States:

Who receives and distributes the drugs in the world’s largest consumer market?
Who leads the American networks that move them from city to city?
Who launders billions of dollars through the financial system?
Who supplies the chemicals, logistics and technology?
And who traffics the weapons that give criminal organizations their firepower?

The U.S. Government Accountability Office reported that 70% of the firearms recovered in Mexico and submitted for tracing between 2014 and 2018 were sourced from the United States. Calling arms trafficking an “absurd excuse” does not make that documented national-security threat disappear.

Mexico must confront criminal organizations with the full force of the law and it is doing so. Data and facts don’t lie. But the United States must confront consumption, domestic distribution from US cartels, money laundering and weapons trafficking with equal strength.

Your proposal is the equivalent of watching a house fill with water and demanding more buckets. Mexico does not need American agents bringing additional buckets. Both countries need to repair the roof from their respective sides: Mexico by dismantling criminal organizations and stopping drug production and trafficking; the United States by reducing demand, destroying domestic distribution networks, prosecuting money laundering and stopping the southbound flow of weapons.

And friendship between nations does not require one country to accept all the blame while the other ignores everything happening inside its own territory.

President Trump is an intelligent man. He deserves advice based on evidence, reciprocity and results—not the recycled interventionist doctrine that has failed everywhere it has been attempted.

Mexico and the United States do not need accusations. We need cooperation without subordination, enforcement on both sides of the border and the courage to address causes rather than merely assign blame.

That is not weakness, Mr. O’Reilly. That is what a serious, modern and effective security policy looks like.
