Prof. of Medicine and Pathology at UCLA. Studying the role and regulation of iron in biology and disease. Passionate about science, art, fine food and design.
@BioIronSocial We've reached an important milestone. In the ASCO Plenary, the first drug based on modern understanding of systemic iron homeostasis, the hepcidin agonist Rusfertide, reported great effectiveness in polycythemia vera: reduced phlebotomies and improved symptoms.
Last but not least - at the Scientific Session on Heme and Iron - Dr. Kautz dissected the direct and indirect mechanisms regulating iron distribution to the erythron, and described the hepatokine FGL1 as a newly identified hepcidin regulator in response to anemia and hypoxia.
Always good to see new young faces joining the Iron community and becoming member of BioIron! Here Shilpa with her mentor during poster session at ASH!
Who is ready for the ASH meeting? @ASH_hematology
Next week at ASH we will have an outstanding Scientific Session of the Heme and Iron Committee chaired by Laura Silvestri. Here below some details…. Either virtually or in person, don’t miss this!

@CMBAltitude@ISEMPH@sacnas@HumBioAssoc Thanks for tweeting! We enjoyed thinking through and writing this review on an important but neglected area of iron biology.
