The beginning of AJP Taylors ‘English History 1914–1945’ famously ‘goes hard’, as the internet puts it, but part of its brilliance is surely that it was written (or rather edited) to fit a single page.
The UK won two world wars and Japan lost one horrifically. Yet it’s Japan that is still a culturally homogeneous, high-trust, low-crime country.
Mass immigration does more damage to your nation than being hit with a nuclear bomb.
@JohnWight1 How is it illiterate to say that a nation must live within its means? It’s exactly what we should be doing. Particularly now with our debt-to-gdp ratio being at around 93%.
@thelefttake He, like me, wants British people to stay and far fewer foreign born citizens arriving here, legally and illegally. Net migration is down because people are leaving in larger numbers.
Immigration is cumulative.
In 2001, roughly 1 in 12 people living in the UK were born overseas.
Just 25 years later, it's roughly 1 in 5.
This is one of the most rapid and drastic demographic changes, outside of war, in human history - no wonder the public are concerned!
@ralphandemmann@KateWilton1@DavidJFoord History says otherwise. From 1850 to 1900, the US economy grew massively, while prices actually decreased over that period.
Tocqueville warned that freedom is rarely destroyed all at once - but slowly traded away for comfort, convenience, and security.

@KateWilton1@DavidJFoord An optimum rate?! How? How is prices continuing to rise by 2% each year “optimum”?
Optimum would be 0%, with prices rising and falling due to rises and decreases in demand. Instead, the government prints money and spends massively, pushing prices up for society as a whole.
@campbellclaret@RestIsPolitics Please outline why it should be the job of Country A’s taxpayers to fund Country B. And also why it is in country A’s national interest to do so, when such a country is nearly $40 trillion in debt. Thanks
How does decreasing taxes hurt a guy on 45k? Jeff Bezos makes money because the people who live on money like 45k a year depend on his service because it is cheap, reliable and easy to use. Bezos makes money because his service works. The government can spend as much and tax as much as desired and will never go out of business. So why vilify the guy who has actually contributed to the economy?
The leader of the Lib Dems, and the leader and deputy leader of the Green party, think some women have penises. In itself, it seems like a relatively unimportant matter. But it is symptomatic of a contempt for science and evidence-based truth. Could you vote for a flat-Earther?

@JamesCleverly Why is that a bad thing? It’s pure virtue signalling. The Ukraine war has been dragging on for nearly longer than World War One, with no end in sight. So why would we want anything to do with it?
It’s as though Keir Starmer is on a suicide mission as Prime Minister at this point. How did this divisive and dishonest tactic work after Southport? He has done nothing to stop the small boats, nothing to ban Iran’s terror fronts in the UK and now makes his stand on this?
Even if they are spreading supposed “hatred”, why should this be grounds for blocking a protest? In a civil society, free speech is incredibly important, so blocking people from attending a rally is Orwellian. We must be able to allow all forms of protest, so long as they are without calls for violence, which these protests evidently aren’t.
I’ll always champion peaceful protest. But the Unite the Kingdom march organisers are peddling hatred and division.
We’ve already blocked visas for far-right agitators who want to come here to spew their extremist views.
They don't speak for the decent, fair, respectful Britain I know.
