AgunNwa today visited Ozoro community in Delta State to ask questions about the s£xuål haråssm£nt reported in the area days ago, as a market woman confrønted her, saying: “They made the announcement three times that women should stay indoors.”

According to her, several residents around the area refused to speak on camera when she tried to ask about the recently concluded festival, as they were afraid.

However, she was able to gather some information from an indigene, who claimed it was a one-day festival mainly for married women seeking children, adding that after the r!tûål
they would be able to conceive. He also alleged that young single girls were warned not to come out after 4pm.

She later proceeded to the market square, where some women confrønted her again, insisting: “They announced three times that no women should come out. You should leave.”

LIST OF DOCUMENTS THAT DO NOT TRANSFER OWNERSHIP OF LAND.

If you buy a piece of land and you're given only any of the documents below, that doesn't automatically mean you own the land.

Here is a list of 10 documents that don't automatically transfer ownership to a buyer:

1. Contract of sale agreement: It shows the intentions of the parties including the amount involved. It does not transfer ownership of the land.

2. Receipt: It serves as the evidence of payment and not ownership.

3. Deed of Lease: Even if you stayed on the land for 20 years, the legal ownership of the land still remains with the owner not you.

4. Allocation papers: It shows that the land has been allocated to you. It does not transfer ownership to you yet.

5. Tenancy Agreement: It gives you quiet enjoyment of the apartment not ownership.

6. Power of Attorney: It gives you the power over the property by the legal owner of the property. It does not transfer ownership.

7. Consent letter of the family head: It is necessary for validity of the sale. It does not transfer ownership of the land to you.

8. Survey Plan: It shows the size, location, boundaries of the land and not ownership

Any of the above stated documents do not transfer legal ownership of land to anyone.

Never rely only on any of the above documents.
They are not title documents.

If you bought land and all you have is any of the above stated documents, take further steps to secure the legal ownership of the land.

CAN A GUARANTOR BE ARRESTED BECAUSE THE BORROWER DEFAULTED IN REPAYING A LOAN?

NO.

Many people panic when someone they guaranteed fails to repay a loan. Some even receive threats like,
"If he does not repay the loan, we will arrest you." "If he absconds, we will arrest you".

That is intimidation. Not law.

A loan transaction is a CIVIL matter.

When you stand as a guarantor, you are promising to repay the debt if the borrower defaults. Your obligation is financial, not criminal.

If the borrower fails to pay, the proper remedy is for the lender to sue for recovery of the debt and not to use the instrumentality of the police to recover the loan.

It is not a crime to owe money.

Under Nigerian law, the court have held in a plethora of cases that the police are not debt recovery agents. Arrest cannot be used as a tool to enforce repayment of a civil debt.

Section 7 of the Administration of Criminal Justice Act (ACJA) 2015 expressly prohibits arrest in lieu. A guarantor cannot be arrested simply because the borrower defaulted.

However, where there's evidence of fraud, obtaining money by false pretence, or conspiracy, that becomes a criminal matter and the police can effect arrest on the parties involved. In that situation, arrest is based on the alleged crime, not merely on default to repay a loan.

Mere inability or failure to repay a loan does not justify arrest.

HOW CAN THE CREDITOR RECOVER HIS MONEY:

🥢The creditor can sue both the borrower and the guarantor.

🥢The court can order repayment of the loan.

🥢The guarantor may be made to pay if the borrower fails.

That is civil liability and not criminal liability.

Arresting a guarantor over a simple loan default is unlawful.

Know your rights.

Not every threat is backed by law.

Stay informed.
Stay protected.
Stay Legally Wise.

“You’re too small to ever have a child.”

That’s the sentence my husband left behind when he packed his bags.

I was born with dwarfism.
When doctors told us I couldn’t carry children, he decided that meant I couldn’t be a mother at all.
He walked out. I stayed. I signed the divorce papers alone in a silent apartment that still smelled like him.

For a while, I believed the silence.

Then one afternoon, I walked into a shelter.

In the corner of the room was a crib most people passed without stopping. Inside it — a one-year-old Black baby girl. Left at birth. No visitors. No one asking about her.

I picked her up.

She wrapped her tiny fingers around mine and didn’t cry.

That was it.

I signed the papers. I took Naomi home.

People stared at us.
They whispered.
They asked how I would carry her.

I carried her everywhere.

On buses.
Up staircases.
Through grocery stores and doctor’s appointments.
Through every hard year and every beautiful one.

And Naomi? She ran.

She ran faster than doubt.
Faster than the stares.
Faster than every limitation someone once placed on our family.

She grew into a track-and-field champion.
I stood in the crowd, watching her step onto podiums I never imagined we would reach.

I couldn’t bring a child into this world.
