Announcement: the official start of winter ❄️ is today on 11th of December at 07:30 UTC as #Icebreaker Otso departs from #Helsinki as first of the season to commence assisting shipping in #Finland.
After a staggering 172 of #icebreaking operations since the 9th of December, #icebreaker#Otso arrives back in #Helsinki today. The #ice-winter was long for this remarkable ship ⛴. For Otso this was the longest season in history since 1985.
There is hardly anything more beautiful than an #Icebreaker departing for active ops. I/B #Kontio today departing from #Helsinki to the #BayOfBothnia as second for the season.
@looksouth@icenav57@ArctiaLtd Again short answer: although there may be some speed or other restrictions to multi year ice as with all ships, both in Arctic and Antarctic, bow propulsion can and at times is used in polar areas, and they are quite beneficial in the Baltic Sea operations.
