Nature documentaries used to show nature, now they sell climate morality plays.
In Frozen Planet, the BBC led viewers into a dramatic Arctic survival story about newborn polar bear cubs.
But the cubs were filmed in a wildlife center in the Netherlands, not in the Arctic.
Then came the walrus cliff scene in Our Planet on Netflix. Walruses fell from cliffs and the audience was told the culprit was climate change - the chain being: less sea ice, more walruses forced onto land, overcrowding, cliffs, death.
But that neat story hid the reality.
Walruses have long used land haul-outs. The filming location was literally known as "Place of the Walrus."
Polar bears in the area were the cause of the panic, stampede and cliff deaths, not climate change.
The climate script needs victims, and modern nature documentaries are all too happy to oblige.
