I think the key word here in his post—the *most vital* word in fact—is humility. I feel like it's the main ingredient that tech is sorely missing. I can't ever imagine any high-up involved in the AI race of "getting there first" showing any humility. And that's why I'm terrified.

I don't know what my probabilities are on literal extinction, but I think there are a number of ways AI could go poorly for humanity, and at the current frankly terrifying pace humanity will be quite lucky if we manage to find and stay on the narrow path between all the bad outcomes.

I am heartened by the many costly actions OpenAI has taken recently (detailed in several recent posts), but regardless of what you think of OpenAI, this is not a problem that can be solved by any one company (or country) in isolation. We need coordination to be able to approach future capability increases with an appropriate degree of caution and humility, and we need it yesterday.

I resigned from Anthropic today. I spent the last three years doing pretraining research at both OpenAI and Anthropic. Neither company is acting responsibly. They are racing straight to self-improving superintelligence and gambling with our lives. More thoughts below.

Earlier today, AI researcher Jacob Coxon, who spent the past three years working at OpenAI and Anthropic, publicly resigned from Anthropic, warning that both companies are racing toward superintelligence and “gambling with our lives.”

Then Evan Hubinger, Anthropic’s current Head of Alignment Stress-Testing, agreed with him, saying people inside the company genuinely believe AI could kill all humans.

Hubinger said he personally puts the chance of AI wiping out humanity within the next decade at greater than 10% and said Anthropic still does not have a plan to solve the problem.

"South Park" is changing its name to "South America" for Season 29.

“Inspired by the bravery and patriotism of Apple and Google, we are changing the name of South Park to SOUTH AMERICA.  We especially want to thank our parent company Paramount -- a Skydance Capitulation," creators Trey Parker & Matt Stone said in a statement, trolling Trump for changing the name of Lake Ontario to Lake America (and Google and Apple for accepting it).

Season 29 premieres Sept. 16th at 10pm ET/PT on Comedy Central. Additional new episodes will premiere Sept. 30, Oct. 14, Oct. 28, Nov. 11 and Nov. 25.

A story of slow-burn awakening against an icy mountainous backdrop, Andrew Haigh's A LONG WINTER is gorgeous, heartbreaking work. Its subtlety won't be for everyone but it bewitched me. He & Fred Hechinger make a natural director-actor pairing. A film to meditate & luxuriate in.
