@jrkelly A lot of these expensive reagents are enzymes that could be produced in house, similar to the way a lot of labs make their own competent cells to save $.

@ATinyGreenCell I've knocked the catalases out of a couple of yeasts before (S. cerevisiae and Y. lipolytica). Hard to see a difference in growth - the cat negative mutants seemed resistant to redox stress though. I suspect other detox pathways cover for the missing catalase.

Turns out you can add a little bit of detergent, trap the bubbles, and the height of the bubble column is quantitative for catalase activity.
