1. We used the Dublin agreement as much as anyone sensible I.e. not much cos it’s far more cumbersome & expensive to horse trade humans back & forth to different countries than to process their claims. Overall as many people arrived through Dublin as left most years.

2. The Lorries continue to be a key method of entry to this day, there was a marked shift in 2020 when the pandemic halted most freight to small boats as primary, but never the sole method.

3. All evidence from all countries at all times show this adaptability of smuggling routes - when one becomes less viable, another, often more dangerous one replaces it. It is a game of cat and mouse with no end.

4. Politically for France, becoming the dumping ground for refugees the British don’t want to deal with because of their geographic location one stop to the east of us is obviously not plausible. Why should they stay in France? Why should France not send them to Italy? What does Italy then Have to say?

5. We pay the French to patrol their border, but every time a boat is stopped, the people on board are left again, destitute & without solution in northern France, and they simply try again. Most people who make it to the uk have tried multiple times. They will keep trying or die.

6. You can’t force those people to claim asylum in France, they very often have good reason to wish to reach the uk. You can’t make them disappear, you can only throw more money & more brutality at the question.

7. “Replacing” the people trying to get here with hand picked “preferred”
Or supposedly more “genuine” people from elsewhere is conceited & simply fails to deal with the actual problem: THESE people are here. They have rights, are very often refugees with connections to the uk, and need meaningful solutions.

8. This is why any search for solutions that starts with “how do we in the uk make these people just be someone else’s problem?” Is doomed to fail. You have to be realistic and you have to recognise people have rights and need to move. If we start from the acceptance of the need fr real solutions for those real people, in partnership with real other countries, not dumping grounds, the answer, I wild hope, becomes obvious.

Carole Cadwalladr @carolecadwalla exposed one of the biggest political scandals in modern British history. Cambridge Analytica. Brexit dark money. Possible Russian influence in UK democracy. The kind of journalism that wins Pulitzer nominations and keeps people in power very nervous.

So what happened next?

Arron Banks the man who made the biggest single political donation in UK history at around £9 million to Brexit campaigns, sued her personally. Not The @observer , which published her work for years. Not @TEDTalks, which hosted her talk. Her. Individually. A freelance journalist.

The suit was over one sentence in a 2019 TED Talk and a single tweet, in which she said Banks had lied about a secret relationship with the Russian government. Banks denied it. He had, however, admitted meeting Russian embassy officials multiple times more than he originally told a Parliamentary committee.

@guardian, her own publisher, declined to fund her defence.

She crowdfunded her legal costs from 29,000 members of the public.

She faced potential costs of up to £1 million. She eventually won on the main issues in the High Court in 2022, but lost on appeal on one narrow point.

She was ordered to pay Banks £35,000 in damages, issue an apology, and delete certain tweets. She was also hit with a costs order of over £1 million.

The woman who exposed how democracy gets bought had to beg the public for money to stay solvent while doing it.

Seventeen press freedom organisations called the case an attempt to intimidate and silence public interest journalism. The UK government eventually introduced anti-SLAPP legislation. Partly because of what happened to her.

In the UK, you can crowdfund a journalist's survival costs after she exposes the possible corruption of a referendum ..

.. Or you can fund the laws that protect journalists before they get financially destroyed.

We chose the first option.

Nigel Farage and Reform UK want to

- leave the European Convention on Human Rights which protects our right to protest, our right to privacy, our right to fair trials and so much more

- repeal the Equality Act - a key piece of legislation that prevents against discrimination in Britain

- Strip back workers rights

- Lift restrictions on exploitative zero-hours contracts and Legalize "fire and rehire" tactics

- repeal the Renters’ Rights Act which abolishes “no fault evictions” that allow landlords to remove tenants without giving a reason and introduces new duties over health hazards

and to sell all this to the country Farage offers nothing in return but grievance and division. PLEASE DON’T FALL FOR IT.

That anyone could be supporting Farage and Reform with these policies must surely be a damning indictment of UK media in failing to explain all this to the public
