Judaism in Yemen is one of the oldest continuous Jewish communities in the world. Traditions place its beginnings in the biblical period; the earliest firm evidence is from late antiquity. For most of the last 1,400 years the community lived as a protected but legally inferior minority under Muslim rule, scattered across more than a thousand villages and towns. Almost the entire community left in 1949–50. Only a handful of individuals remain today.
