No AI Without HI
Intelligence’s Prosthetic Extension
Let’s decode the slogan: artificial intelligence (AI) can never outrun human intelligence (HI). A crutch does not outperform a healthy leg, nor does a calculator compute for its own sake; AI is simply a prosthetic extension of HI. The human mind came first, and every technological layer is an elaboration—not a replacement—of that original capacity. Put differently, AI is best understood as augmented human intelligence. Ships let us “walk” on water, aircraft let us fly, and cranes let us lift impossible weights; AI plays the same role by expanding our cognitive reach.
Evolution Rather Than Substitution
Expecting a bundle of algorithms to eclipse the brain’s millennia‑tested circuitry is wishful thinking. Despite periodic bouts of techno‑pessimism—and without denying history’s darker chapters—humanity’s trajectory is unmistakably upward: we live longer, healthier, and more safely than at any previous time. The real challenge is to share that progress equitably while inventing ever‑better “prostheses” to keep us moving forward.
Jobs and the Altman–Ive Paradox
Public debate now fixates on the jobs AI might eliminate, as though an alien battalion of humanoid robots were poised to evict us from the workplace. The sensible response is to anticipate change and redirect human talent toward tasks where it adds unique value.
Here Gustavo Entrala—a “delicatessen” YouTuber—offers an elegant illustration. Sam Altman, CEO of OpenAI, has agreed to pay roughly USD 6.5 billion for LoveFrom, the design studio led by Jony Ive, Steve Jobs’s legendary creative partner. Altman, who often predicts that artificial general intelligence (AGI) is just around the corner, has nevertheless spent a fortune on one very human designer.
Entrala’s punchline is telling:
“OpenAI, home to the world’s most powerful models and brightest researchers, keeps saying people will soon be replaceable—yet it spends USD 6.5 billion chiefly to hire one person.”
The lesson is clear: in many domains and decision layers, humans will remain irreplaceable for the foreseeable future.
Less Hysteria, More Homework
Rather than indulging dystopian fantasies, we should learn how these new tools can upgrade our companies, our governments, and our daily lives. That demands experimentation, upskilling, and sober stewardship—precisely the areas where humans excel.
