Después de la eliminación de Croacia, Luka Modrić permaneció completamente solo en la mitad de la cancha. Mientras todos comenzaban a retirarse, él seguía inmóvil, mirando al vacío e intentando aceptar una realidad que ningún amante del fútbol quería ver: acababa de disputar el último partido mundialista de su carrera.

No era una derrota cualquiera. Era el final de un viaje que comenzó hace casi dos décadas vistiendo con orgullo la camiseta de su país. Fueron cinco Copas del Mundo, una histórica final en 2018, un tercer lugar en 2022 y decenas de actuaciones inolvidables que hicieron soñar a millones de croatas.

Luka nunca fue el más rápido, ni el más fuerte físicamente, pero sí fue el que siempre tuvo el talento, la inteligencia y el corazón para cambiar la historia de un partido. Cuando Croacia necesitó un líder, él apareció. Cuando parecía imposible competir contra las grandes potencias, él hizo creer a todo un país que nada era imposible.

Hoy el marcador queda en segundo plano. Lo que realmente duele es saber que no volveremos a ver a Modrić disputando una Copa del Mundo. Se marcha uno de los mediocampistas más elegantes, inteligentes y completos que ha visto este deporte. Un futbolista que conquistó el respeto incluso de quienes nunca apoyaron a Croacia.

No importa si eres madridista, argentino, brasileño, portugués o de cualquier rincón del planeta. Hay jugadores que trascienden los colores y las rivalidades. Luka Modrić es uno de ellos. Su legado permanecerá para siempre en la historia del fútbol y en la memoria de todos los que tuvimos el privilegio de verlo jugar.
