Finally, my God, just make me care about the kid who died before you kill him. That whole scene falls completely flat because his only function the entire story was to be the good older brother to make Lo'ak sad when he dies.
It doesn't work. He needed some real development
As a relentless avatar marine stored in the cloud he would at least be a much more interesting threat even if he's still barely a character. He can represent the unrelenting threat of the humans colonizing the planet
That would be a much stronger dilemma for him.
Also, villain marine guy. He's just boring as fuck. But again they could lean into the story elements so readily and obviously right there- make him die and keep coming back
Also spider, he kinda sucks. Why's he helping his obviously evil dad and other humans after fighting against it?
This would be easily fixed with something else from the title- why don't they offer him an avatar? The one thing he badly wants is to be Navi. It's so obvious
Getting right to the heart of it, the closest thing there is to a central theme is characters who have to break with the past- Jake is running from his past as a human, marine guy dealing with his own death, spider his father, weird girl her mysterious birth, etc
Just the most generic tropey bullshit writing.
80s style bullies picking on the main kid, somehow topping unobtanium with amrita- the whale juice, and again the shallow villain
Thematically incoherent
Even though it's the title of the movie, the "way of water" is, like, nothing at all. A breathing exercise or a collection of ideas totally at war with each other
1) limp ass generic characters with limp ass character arcs
The villain is completely shallow
The older brother who died, you don't feel it at all cus he had zero development or personality other than "good son"
Spider has no reason to so easily help the villains
