If you're voting today, think about the Canadian standing in a grocery aisle putting something back because $20 has to last until Friday.

Think about the senior stretching prescriptions. The young couple who have stopped talking about buying a house because even the down payment has become fantasy. The small-business owner lying awake doing arithmetic at 2 a.m. The laid-off worker pretending for the kids that everything is fine.

Think about what it actually feels like to live in Canada right now when there isn't enough money. Then ask yourself one uncomfortable question:

If you're voting Liberal today, what exactly would have to get worse before you stopped? Because eventually political loyalty stops being an excuse.

You can hate Conservatives. You can despise Poilievre. Put his face on the dartboard if it improves your evening.

But your ballot doesn't happen in isolation... Other people have to live with it.

That's the part we sanitize when we talk about elections. We call everything "political preference," as though choosing a government has roughly the same moral significance as choosing mustard.

It doesn't.

There are Canadians working full-time who can't get ahead. People are delaying retirement, young adults can't leave home, families are quietly accumulating debt just to maintain a basic, ordinary life, and businesses are cutting hours and shifts while postponing investment or wondering whether staying open is even worth it.

And to the comfortable older voter waiting expectantly for grandchildren or great-grandchildren, wondering when the younger generation is finally going to settle down and have babies:

Have you looked at what it costs to build a family in the country you're voting to preserve as it is right now?

Your kids and grandkids aren't necessarily rejecting marriage, children or home ownership. Some of them are doing the math.

They can't afford the house.
They can't afford the rent.
They can't afford daycare, groceries and another mouth to feed while already watching half a paycheque disappear into basic survival.

So perhaps before asking when the grandbabies are coming, ask whether the next generation can afford to produce them.

You may be comfortable, but they aren't.

You may own your home, but they can't buy one.

You may be waiting for great-grandchildren, but they're waiting to be able to afford children.

And somewhere tonight, somebody will still tell a cashier to take the chicken and milk off the total owed at the cash register.

Not because they suddenly became vegetarian, but because they did the math.

That is Canada too, right now, today!

So when somebody who is financially comfortable tells me they're voting Liberal again, I wonder how much suffering has to become visible before political loyalty finally becomes embarrassing.

And when somebody struggling themselves does it? I'm even more bewildered.

❓️ How many times can you get poorer while insisting the people governing you deserve another turn?

❓️ How many scandals become "noise"?

❓️ How much incompetence becomes normal?

❓️ How many neighbours have to fall behind before partisan loyalty starts feeling less like conviction and more like wilful blindness?

Because Ottawa watches elections too.

🏅 Reward failure and they'll learn failure is survivable.

🏅 Reward hypocrisy and they'll learn hypocrisy is cheap.

🏅 Reward incompetence and they'll send you another invoice.

Today, three ridings get to decide whether Ottawa receives a warning or another permission slip.

Then tomorrow morning, politicians will study the results and decide what Canadians are willing to tolerate.

Meanwhile somebody will open the fridge and wonder what can stretch until payday.

Somebody will tell their kid, "maybe next year."

Somebody will look at another rent increase and wonder where exactly they're supposed to go.

Somebody will close a business they spent twenty years building.

Those people are on the ballot too.

So before you colour in that Liberal circle today, forget the party for ten seconds...

Look around.
Look at your family.
Look at your neighbours.
Look at the country you're handing your children.

And decide whether your political loyalty matters more than what is happening to them. Because that grocery aisle wasn't a metaphor, there's a real Canadian standing in it.

And if your vote tells Ottawa to keep doing what it's doing, don't look away when they have to put something else back while telling you there will be no grandbabies in your Liberal future.
