Marvel's Wolverine has been surrounded by controversy since 2021 when Sweet Baby Inc. first publicly announced their involvement. The project saw its original creative director Brian Horton and game director Cameron Christian both depart mid-development over what sources described as "creative decisions around the game," with associate narrative director Mary Kenney also departing while remaining a credited writer on the shipped product.

God of War creator David Jaffe publicly called the female character designs "ugly and disgusting," directing his criticism at Marvel Games VP Bill Rosemann, while Grummz documented that every female character in the launch trailer was hit with what he called "the AAA ugly stick."

"Professional" reviews confirm the mutant persecution narrative is framed as a political allegory for ethnic minorities, LGBTQ people, and immigrants, with the Kotaku review drawing a direct parallel to the Trump administration's policies targeting transgender people and immigrants.
