@BlackPatriarch1 I appreciate the sentiment, but the cold hard truth is the lowest common denominator IS the mainstream. It dominates our entertainment culture and academic discipline, and now it's moving into our politics.
As America reflects on 250 years, truth must be part of the commemoration.
For Black Americans, America as a democracy is only 61 years old. That truth is not a rejection of this nation. It is a call for America to become what it has promised.
May we choose truth, justice, and the Beloved Community.

Without argument one of the Greatest Americans ever.
Truly a patriot who pushed, policymakers and presidents to the standards promised to all!
Frederick Douglass reminded us what today means to the least us and what must be done to provide "Liberty, and Justice for all".
Have an amazing 4th America happy 250th and Remember and Honor True Patriots who Pushed this country to be what she promised. ๐บ๐ธ

I wonder if he meant "slumming" as in your skill set was better than the overall genre in his mind..."glam poodles" is a great line tho.
But I remember a lot of rock criticism of that era having a strong revenge of the nerds quality. The part about seeing Nirvana as part of an overall trend is on point but it was the same deconstruction the Sex Pistols represented for the glam rock era.
@FmmDoom@lizzo When y'all gonna realize these celebrities don't give a fuck about these social causes or the public beyond using them to promote themselves?
We also had Public Enemy, Latifah, Arrested Development, 2Pac, OutKast, as well as male and female R&B singers and groups (who weren't tryna be rappers) to balance that out. The current mainstream Black music landscape is degeneracy 24/7.

@ModestSole1 Look here bruh. I'm waiting at the dock until I see whatever boat Drew Barrymore, Orlando Bloom and Hannah Waddingham be on and booking my ticket RIGHT THERE.
The family of Tony Brown, the trailblazing black journalist died last week at 93. His "Tony Brown's Journal" was the longest running series in the history of PBS. He was the founding dean of Howard's communication school and later inaugural dean Hampton's journalism school.
In the tradition of the black press, he rejected the activist/journalist distinction. Just one example: In 1963, he helped coordinate a 500,000 person march in Detroit where it is believed Martin Luther King first gave a version of the I Have A Dream speech.
