The 2025 campaign message for Rail Safety Week was launched today “Stay Off, Stay Safe — Tracks are for Trains.”
We heard from school students in Mt Maunganui, the Mayor of Matamata-Piako and many others who have experienced the devastation when people step inside the rail corridor.
Our message spoke about the critical importance of safety for rail workers too—moving long lengths of steel, thousand tonne trains, and often being the first responder when commuters have health incidents. Training, backing your teammates, and experience counts for everything—and yes, the right gear at the right time.
So when you are near the network: stay off, stay safe.

On a busy day 30,000 people use the train to get into Wellington, so we’re grateful to have the Mayor’s support for rail safety week. There are way too many collisions at level crossings and even more near misses. Time to get the word out to take more care around railway tracks.
Well done ad from @TrackSAFENZ! It demonstrates the target behavior, provides a catchy way to remember what to do, and is entertaining at the same time.

This Rail Safety Week, @TrackSAFENZ and KiwiRail are helping you meet the legend. And his horse.
Wherever rail crossing advice is needed, Stan will be there to share the secrets of his 'Steely Stare’™.
Make sure you hone your own Steely Stare whenever you're around the tracks.
You know your road rules, and now’s your chance to prove it.
The train's already passed through the intersection and the boom gates have lifted—but the lights are still flashing. So is the driver of the green car allowed to go now?

Fantastic event this morning to mark the beginning of Rail Safety Week for 2022. Thanks Hon Michael Wood Minister of Transport for officially launching the week. #railsafety#railsafetyweek@michaelwoodnz
@RailSafetyWeek Starts Today - Our friends at @TrackSAFENZ are getting on board with this superstition – and we are too. Blow to the left and right for safe travels before you cross rail tracks. Whether you’re driving, cycling or walking, all it takes is a little puff each way
