Don’t rush to clap for these dramatic “ID scandal” headlines and @DCI_Kenya mugshot parades just yet. DCI goons are corrupt thugs who break into the homes of dissenters.

Every time the regime needs to push through a shady “security upgrade” (think new biometric kits, digital ID systems, or overpriced scanners from a tenderpreneur’s cousin), they first manufacture a crisis: suddenly 26 small-time cyber café operators and rogue clerks are the biggest threat to national security since Al-Shabaab.

Mainstream (githeri) media and corrupt regime bloggers copy-paste the script word for word, flood your timeline with mugshots, and scream “foreigners are stealing citizenship!”

Classic problem-reaction-solution playbook.

Create panic over a loophole the government deliberately left open (by scrapping vetting in border counties), parade a few low-level fall guys, then announce the “only fix” is a billion-shilling contract for fancy new tech under “emergency” procurement - no tenders, no questions - because “national security.”

Meanwhile, the real grand corruption (Adani deals, fake fertiliser, stolen billions in health and education) gets zero airtime.

Ask yourself: if the system was truly broken, why arrest cybercafe operators instead of the senior officials who relaxed the rules in the first place? Because the little guys are expendable props, and the real goal is the fat contract waiting on the other side of the fear.

Stay sharp. These headlines aren’t news - they’re the opening act for the next heist.
