The Director General of @WHO, Dr. @DrTedros, has commended Uganda's response to the ongoing Ebola outbreak, citing the country's swift action and strong surveillance systems in preventing wider transmission of the disease.

I am in #Uganda, where the government has mounted a prompt and capable response to the outbreak of #Ebola.
Screening at the borders helped detect cases arriving from neighbouring #DRC, and the country’s surveillance, testing and case management systems are doing steady work. Of the 19 confirmed cases so far, 14 were among people who entered from DRC and five are Ugandan nationals. Sadly, two people from DRC have died, and our thoughts are with their families.
@WHO is supporting Uganda, alongside @AfricaCDC and partners across the region, as the country leads this response.
With continued collaboration, I am confident this outbreak can be brought under control.

Fellow Countrymen and Women, here is our position statement as a professional association mandated to shape the nursing and midwifery policy landscape.
The struggle continues, victory is certain!
“The medical interns are too many”.
Uganda currently has 8 National Referrals and 16 Regional Referral Hospitals
Averagely, the government deploys about 2,100 interns a year.
These numbers are not even enough to cover the 16 regional referral hospitals.
We haven’t even talked about the 8 NRH which would take more that half of the already existing numbers
So what does this mean.
In practice, the intern does 36-72 hrs of shift nonstop to cover up for the gaps/shifts which gap is made worse when one is sick or on leave.
The government getting cheap labor while overworking the interns is already a bigger risk and saying they won’t be paid is left for one to wonder what exactly will happen.
An unpaid or underfunded internship doesn't just exploit medical interns; it directly compromises patient safety in our most critical units.
Look closely at the reality in our hospitals;
-Overcrowded NICUs
-Extreme Understaffing
-Unsafe Environments
We cannot talk about healthcare quality while ignoring the chronic understaffing and exploitative policies breaking our healthcare system.
-No nurse can work in chaos.
-No patient should be put at risk.

🇺🇬 Uganda Ebola Outbreak Update | As of May 30
Uganda’s Ebola response continues, with national teams and partners working to detect cases early, follow contacts, protect health workers and stop further transmission.
Every contact followed, every sample tested, and every frontline worker protected brings the response closer to interrupting transmission.
Africa CDC continues to support the Government of Uganda (@GovUganda), its @MinofHealthUG, and partners through surveillance, contact tracing, laboratory testing, case management and community engagement.
We are sharing Uganda-specific figures to provide clear, country-by-country information across affected countries. #AfricaResponds
Dear members of the public,
The medical fraternity is seeking your support. Your health and safety may be at risk due to this policy that want intern doctors working without pay.
Why should this concern you?
Intern doctors are a critical part of patient care. They often work long shifts, sometimes up to 36 hours, while handling emergencies, admissions, and ward duties. Expecting them to do this without any form of remuneration places immense physical, mental, and financial strain on them.
A demoralized and overworked workforce increases the risk of burnout, errors, absenteeism, and even unethical practices born out of desperation. Ultimately, it is the patient who bears the consequences.
This is not just a doctors' issue, it is a public health issue.
We therefore call upon all stakeholders and members of the public to raise their voices and support the call for fair treatment of intern doctors.
Say NO to unpaid internship. Protect healthcare. Protect patients.

Today had a productive call with @Dr_JeanKaseya Head of @AfricaCDC , and he agreed to correct the errors in their reporting on Ebola cases in Uganda. He also informed me that a regional center on pandemics response will be established in Uganda. Happy to learn Africa is taking lead in the fight against #Ebola
The world is short 6 million nurses, tha is half of the global health worker shortage and a crisis we cannot ignore.
Speaking to @SABCNews, ICN CEO @HowardCatton was clear: this isn’t just about training new nurses. Countries must invest in nursing education, faculty, support systems, and just as critically, retain the nurses they already have.
The solution is clear:
➡️ Invest in nurses
➡️ Value nurses
➡️ Retain nurses
➡️ Empower nurses
ICN and its National Nurses Associations members are taking this message straight to #WHA79 next week.
Because without nurses, there is no health care.
