A nanny who was on trial for allegedly trying to poison a Jewish family has been acquitted of aggravated antisemitism charges by a French Appeals court.

Leïla Y., 42, the nanny for a French Jewish family, was on trial for allegedly poisoning the couple and their three young children with toxic household products in January 2024. She reportedly confessed that she did it “because they have money and power” and said she “should never have worked for Jews; they only brought me problems.”

She was sentenced to two and a half years in prison for “administering a harmful substance that caused incapacitation for more than eight days.” During the first trial, it was reported that the court refused to uphold any aggravated antisemitism charges within the case, because the reported comments were apparently made by the nanny some time after the incident and without a lawyer present.

An appeal took place on this week at the Versailles Court of Appeal, and found that the nanny’s comments are not even to be considered as antisemitic, an incomprehensible decision that is being appealed again by the family’s lawyers.

It has also emerged that the nanny was living in France illegally, after a deportation order was issued to her in February 2024, and has subsequently been convicted of using a forged document as a national identity card. She has reportedly been refused entry to France for five years as a consequence.
